The University鈥檚 Statement of Policy on Free Speech defines 鈥渇reedom of speech鈥 broadly as 鈥渢he right to seek, receive, share and impart information and ideas of all kinds, in a variety of forms, including orally, in writing, in print, and in the form of art or music, or through any other media of one鈥檚 choice.鈥 This definition recognizes that speech can be expressed in many different forms. This guide will use the phrase 鈥渇reedom of expression鈥 to make it clear that expressive activity is not limited to speech.
鈥淓xpression鈥 includes any activity that conveys or attempts to convey a meaning, and freedom of expression broadly protects such expressive activities. These can include, among other activities:
- speeches
- music
- art
- dance
- sit-ins
- carrying signs and billboards
- postering
- handing out leaflets
- protesting
