More than 160 students from across the region came together at this year’sÌýYork Region Science and Technology FairÌýtoÌýpresentÌýwork grounded in hands-on research and inquiry.ÌýProjectsÌýexplored complex challenges spanning health, environment, and emerging technologies,ÌýincludingÌýa computational model for testing early-stage medical treatments, an AI system for detecting signs of skin cancer, and a flood-mapping toolÌýdesginedÌýto better assess climate risk.ÌýTheÌýbreadth of workÌýreflectedÌýthoughtful engagement withÌýreal-worldÌýproblemsÌýand a clear commitment to using research asÌýa tool for understanding and responding to them.ÌýConnected Minds wasÌýproud toÌýcontinue itsÌýsupportÌýofÌýtheÌýÌýfairÌýand to be part of an environmentÌýwhere young researchers could test ideas, share their work, and engage directly with others.ÌýIn creating opportunities like this, Connected Minds is also investing in how emerging technologies are explored and understood in relation to the people and communities they willÌýimpact.ÌýÌý

These early experiences play a formative role in how students begin to see themselves within research, not only as learners, but as contributors to broader scientific and societal conversations, something reflected in the strong participation from students, families, and the broader community throughout the day. Early engagement with research can influence how young people approach science and collaboration, as well as how they understand their role in addressing future challenges, particularly those Connected Minds is exploring at the intersection of human behaviour, technological systems, and broader societal change. These moments of exploration and exchange are where new ways of thinking begin to take shape.
Through continued supportÌýof initiatives likeÌýthe York Region Science and Technology Fair, Connected Minds is helping to buildÌýmoreÌýinclusiveÌýandÌýinterdisciplinary pathways into research. Creating space for emerging voices ensuresÌýthat future innovation is shaped by aÌýbroaderÌýrange of perspectives, experiences, and ideas, strengthening the foundation for research that is both impactful and socially responsive.Ìý
