External Affiliates


How to apply to be an External Affiliate

CITY External Affiliates comprise two groups:

(i) Community members, activists, public officials, researchers or policy analysts not affiliated with a university whose activities (work or non-work) relate substantively to the research concerns of CITY. This membership category recognizes the important contributions public intellectuals make to the on-going scholarly life of the Institute. Members are expected to participate in the research and intellectual life of the Institute. Membership is by invitation or application for a temporary and limited time period, renewable if appropriate., using criteria approved by the Executive Committee.

(ii) Faculty members at other universities, for whom membership is either through invitation, or by application, and requires substantive and continuing participation in the intellectual life of the Institute. Appointments of faculty external to York are made for up to three years, renewable.

External Affiliates

Jarrett Rose is a sociologist and an assistant professor in the Community & Behavioral Health Program and the Department of Sociology at the State University of New York (SUNY) Polytechnic Institute. His research focuses on the social determinants and cultural dynamics of health, illness, and disease, with an emphasis on mental health and psychedelics.

In the fields of psychedelic science, culture, and medicine, Dr. Rose investigates the collective and cultural contexts of psychedelic-assisted therapy, analyzing how social and emotional connection and group dynamics influence healing, self-transformation, and trauma recovery. His research has been published in journals such as Sociology of Health & Illness, Sociology Compass, and the Journal of Psychedelic Studies, and he has been interviewed on platforms including Psychology Today and podcasts like Mind, Body, Health, & Politics and The Kyle Thiermann Show.

Dr. Rose also works in the field of global health as a member of the . This interdisciplinary, international research team examines how the 鈥減ostcolonial condition鈥 shapes the emergence of, and responses to, disease epidemics such as Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa. Their research has been published in journals such as Social Science & Medicine, Social Theory & Health, and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Oforiwaa Pee Agyei-Boakye is pursuing doctoral studies in Transport Geography at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Her scholarly work focuses on transportation, transit investment evaluation, and sustainability. Prior to that, she had a Masters in City Planning with a focus on sustainable transportation and infrastructure planning from the University of Pennsylvania and worked as a transportation planner. Oforiwaa Pee is also a Location Intelligence consultant at Gonigs Inc. developing strategies in urban planning and business from spatial data.
