Sadia Tasnim<\/strong> (data science) and Brianna Nguyen<\/strong> (digital technologies) have been named 快播视频\u2019s Co-op and Work-Integrated Learning students of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u202fCo-op Student of the Year award\u202frecognizes an outstanding student who has made a significant impact during a co-op work term in the 2025 calendar year. This year marks the inaugural launch of the award as an institution\u2011wide competition, and invited nominations from students across all programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Work-Integrated Learning Student of the Year award recognizes an outstanding student who has made significant impact in an activity defined by Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada<\/a> (CEWIL) as work-integrated learning in the 2025 calendar year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both awards acknowledge students\u2019 ongoing efforts to promote work-integrated learning within their campus, communities and industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sadia Tasnim: Co-op Student of the Year<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor as long as I\u202fremember, I\u2019ve noticed how numbers quietly dictate what the world pays attention to,\u201d says Tasnim, a\u202ffourth-year data science student.<\/p>\n\n\n

Long before entering York\u2019s Data Science program in the Faculty of Science<\/a>,\u202fshe marvelled at the figures she saw in news\u202fheadlines. She reflected not just on the\u202fresponse they generated, but\u202fon the hidden work behind them \u2013 who collected them, how they shaped decisions\u202fand how they drove outcomes.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When she decided to pursue co-operative education\u202fas part of her undergraduate degree, instead of working at a\u202flarge tech company, financial institution or consulting firm,\u202fTasnim\u2019s work term took her to an\u202funexpected place: a local\u202ffood bank.\u202f\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working first in\u202fagency relations and then as a data administrator,\u202fshe joined Food Banks Mississauga on a growing data team and found a space where her\u202ftalents at\u202finterpreting\u202fand presenting data\u202faligned with her desire\u202ffor community impact.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among four student hires, she was one of two selected to\u202fco-lead\u202fthe organization\u2019s largest annual initiative: the Annual Visitor Survey.\u202fShe led\u202fa team of 20 volunteers responsible for collecting data from food bank\u202fclients, assessing service satisfaction and gathering demographic information to help the organization better understand its community\u2019s needs.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of her\u202fmost significant contributions\u202fcame as\u202fthe result of an\u202funexpected\u202fchallenge, when she\u202ffaced\u202fthe sudden\u202fdeparture\u202fof a direct supervisor. Tasnim welcomed the opportunity to lead her team to the project\u2019s completion on time.\u202fShe helped compile and analyze the data to produce\u202fan exceptionally detailed report that her\u202fdirector\u202fdescribed as \u201cthe first of its kind\u201d for the organization.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tasnim also showed initiative by attending external workshops hosted by non-profits\u202fto understand\u202fhow data\u202fcan\u202fbe communicated effectively. By the end of her co-op term, she had completed nine reports, including a comprehensive organizational analysis, and presented her findings at a board meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u202fmost rewarding\u202fpart of her experience, she says, was knowing she had contributed to key food security insights that may guide future programs and resource allocation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom the moment I interviewed Sadia, what stood out most was that her values and integrity drive the work she does,\u201d says Nicole Norris, director of programs and agency network, Food Banks Mississauga.\u202f\u201cAs a food bank, our organization has evolving data needs and seeks talented\u202findividuals to elevate our data approach.\u202fHer combination of technical\u202fexpertise, leadership potential and commitment to the organization\u2019s mission made her an asset to our team and left a lasting positive impact.\u201d\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to making a difference through her co-op role,\u202fTasmin is an active leader in\u202fchampioning and contributing to WIL. She attended the 2025\u202fCEWIL Canada\u202fOntario Regional Conversation, where\u202fshe\u202fhelped surface\u202fchallenges in the landscape of WIL\u202fwith peers and leaders. She also represented York\u2019s co-op program as an ambassador during the Ontario Universities Fair, where she shared her experiences with prospective\u202fYork\u202fapplicants.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tasnim also demonstrates leadership in her program as\u202fthe founder\u202fof\u202fYork\u2019s Data Science Club.\u202f In this role, she has\u202festablished\u202fa membership of more than 120 students and secured sponsorships from local organizations to provide financial support for\u202fthe club's growth.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recognition of her achievements and her work inspiring\u202fyoung women to pursue careers in technology,\u202fshe\u202fhas been\u202fnominated\u202ffor CS-CAN-INFO-CAN's W. Powley Woman of Inspiration Award.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brianna Nguyen: Work-Integrated Learning Student of the Year<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u202fNguyen, a second-year digital technologies student at York\u2019s Markham Campus<\/a>\u202fand a Dev Degree intern at Shopify,\u202fhas distinguished herself through initiative, persistence and a commitment to community impact.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n

Her academic,\u202fprofessional\u202fand creative pursuits demonstrate\u202fher engagement and advocacy for WIL as a tool for empowerment, innovation and growth.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the fully work-integrated\u202fDigital Technologies program\u202fat Markham Campus, Nguyen dedicates 80 per cent of her time to working full-time at Shopify, and 20 per cent to completing her academic courses in intensive five-day blocks.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI chose digital technologies because it offers a work-integrated experience unlike any other program,\u201d she says. \u201cThrough this immersive program, I was pushed to take initiative, apply my knowledge in real-world settings and step into meaningful roles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a Dev Degree intern, she has spent the past\u202fseveral\u202fmonths contributing to technical projects within Shopify\u2019s Activation team. Her work helps support new merchants\u202fas they onboard and begin to use the platform.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early in her internship, she helped build back-end functionality for Shopify\u2019s new Retail Yearly subscription, gaining foundational experience in shipping production code.\u202f\u202fWith more experience, skill and confidence, Nguyen moved to more\u202fcomplex challenges involving AI.\u202fShe proactively sought opportunities for \u201cpair programming\u201d with senior engineers, data scientists and product managers \u2013 a practice in which one developer writes code and another provides review and feedback. This initiative accelerated her learning, she says, and grow her relationship with different members of the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nguyen is proud to have\u202fcontributed to development of Shopify\u2019s AI-powered voice assistant, as well as a new tool that enables non-developers to quickly test prompts across AI models, reducing iteration time and improving\u202fworkflows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nguyen's manager acknowledged her performance, noting she exceeded expectations in her role.\u00a0Despite being a first-year intern, her performance\u00a0was recognized as demonstrating\u00a0capabilities\u00a0equivalent to a full-time junior developer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond her technical skills, Nguyen has shown leadership by building inclusive spaces for peers. She has hosted Lightning Talks for Shopify staff and interns, presented openly about overcoming imposter syndrome, mentored new Dev Degree cohorts and served as a student executive for ElleHacks, Canada\u2019s largest hackathon for women and non-binary students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also\u202frepresented York and engaged in meaningful connection-building at the Canadian Celebration of Women in Computing (CAN-CWiC)<\/a> conference where she was\u202fsponsored by\u202fWomen in Science and Engineering (WISE) at 快播视频.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her achievements reflect her advocacy for inclusive innovation and her belief in the power of WIL to build confidence and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
