{"id":402941,"date":"2026-01-23T14:28:40","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T19:28:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/?p=402941"},"modified":"2026-03-05T15:25:20","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T20:25:20","slug":"york-u-recognizes-black-history-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2026\/01\/23\/york-u-recognizes-black-history-month\/","title":{"rendered":"York\u00a0U\u00a0recognizes\u00a0Black History Month\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2026\/01\/23\/luniversite-york-souligne-le-mois-de-lhistoire-des-noirs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Voir la version fran\u00e7aise<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Black History Month&nbsp;provides&nbsp;an opportunity to focus attention and recommit to acting against systemic discrimination and anti-Black racism that marginalizes the experiences,&nbsp;efforts&nbsp;and rights of Black community members.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This month&nbsp;is&nbsp;also&nbsp;a time to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/about\/black-history-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learn more<\/a>&nbsp;about the important contributions that Black members of the York community have made, such as:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the work of Professor&nbsp;<strong>Natasha Henry-Dixon<\/strong>, as highlighted in the University\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2025\/07\/30\/york-university-recognizes-emancipation-day-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emancipation Day statement<\/a>;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2025\/01\/31\/lassonde-professor-champions-diversity-inclusion-in-role-as-mentor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mentoring work being undertaken<\/a>&nbsp;by Assistant Professor&nbsp;<strong>Alvine Belle<\/strong>;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2025\/03\/07\/york-researcher-tackles-justice-system-anxiety-in-black-youth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">project<\/a>&nbsp;to help connect Black youth and their families in Canada with tools to help them cope with anxiety resulting from experiences with the justice system,&nbsp;led by&nbsp;Professor&nbsp;<strong>Godfred Boateng<\/strong>, director of the Global &amp; Environmental Health Lab and a Canada Research Chair in Global Health and Humanitarianism;&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2025\/10\/24\/claiming-space-creating-change-black-student-leader-advances-equity-at-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leadership and advocacy work<\/a>&nbsp;of third-year student&nbsp;<strong>Karina&nbsp;Deepnarine<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We also see Black History&nbsp;Month as a time to renew and reassert York\u2019s dedication to advancing the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/abr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/295\/2021\/12\/211207-YorkU-VPEPC-Action-Plan-on-Black-Inclusion-Report-EN-final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Action Plan on Black Inclusion<\/a>&nbsp;and supporting&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yspace\/programs-streams\/bea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Black&nbsp;Entrepreneurship&nbsp;Alliance<\/a>,&nbsp;and&nbsp;advocating for and appreciating the successes of talented&nbsp;Black scholars, staff, students and alumni.&nbsp;As we approach the five-year anniversary of the release of the&nbsp;action&nbsp;plan,&nbsp;we are committed to begin a review of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/vpepc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/310\/2021\/02\/FrameworkToAddressAntiBlackRacism-11.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Framework to Address Anti-Black Racism<\/a> and action plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are warmly encouraged to attend and&nbsp;participate&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;many&nbsp;events this month organized by Black community members at York.
