Keele Campus on Oct. 17 to receive an honorary doctor of laws degree during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schulich.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Schulich School of Business<\/a> fall convocation ceremony.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Lau, co-founder of the global storytelling platform Wattpad and founding partner of venture capital firm Two Small Fish Ventures, addressed the graduating class of 2025 with a message rooted in resilience, risk-taking and self-belief.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris Carder<\/strong>, executive director at Schulich\u2019s Office of Innovation &amp; Entrepreneurship, introduced Lau as \u201ca Schulich graduate, entrepreneur, investor, mentor and one of Canada\u2019s most respected voices in the technology and venture capital space.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The York alum then took the podium, noting that this year marks the 20th anniversary since she walked the same stage to receive her MBA.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her speech, Lau reflected on her journey from Schulich graduate to tech innovator, sharing lessons learned from building Wattpad into a global platform with over 100 million users and leading one of Canada\u2019s top-performing venture capital firms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lau\u2019s address focused on three key lessons for the graduating class: embracing risk, leveraging unique qualities and&nbsp;aiming for transformative outcomes rather than incremental gains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEntrepreneurship and innovation are not really about making things 10 per cent better, 20 per cent better,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s about making things 100 Zwick.<\/blockquote><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Lau recounted the early days of Wattpad, when the platform had only a handful of users and generated just $2 in ad revenue. Despite the modest start, she and her husband Allen Lau \u2013 a co-founder of Wattpad \u2013&nbsp;made the decision to invest everything they had to keep the company going.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lau explained that risk in the real world isn't neatly calculated or predicted. Instead, it requires understanding personal limits and knowing how much one is prepared to lose before taking the leap. Without that clarity, she said, it\u2019s impossible to truly commit to a risky decision with confidence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were willing to go to zero, but we weren\u2019t willing to go into the negatives,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s what embracing risk really looks like for an entrepreneur. It\u2019s not about avoiding loss, it\u2019s about defining your boundaries and then giving everything you\u2019ve got.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Encouraging graduands to lean into their individual strengths, she said, \u201cThe best execution comes from knowing who you are \u2013 your uniqueness \u2013 and leaning into it. Don\u2019t downplay it. Don\u2019t hide it \u2013 it\u2019s really your superpower.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lau described how her own experiences \u2013 scaling Wattpad, working in semiconductors and learning from top global investors \u2013 gave her a unique edge when she transitioned into venture capital. Her firm, Two Small Fish Ventures, is now known for backing tech founders who are solving complex problems with innovative solutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her final message urged graduating students to aim high and pursue transformative opportunities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t settle for something small,\u201d she said, telling graduands to take bold steps in their careers. \u201cChase the opportunities that stretch you, the ones that scare you, the ones that could redefine everything.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lau closed with a reminder that success is rarely linear. There will be many, many pauses, setbacks and even zigzags, she said, but each twist is part of the journey that prepares you for the next leap forward.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe world doesn\u2019t need another safe bet,\u201d she said. \u201cIt needs bold leaders, innovative thinkers and dreamers who are willing to take that shot.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCongratulations again, class of 2025.
