Together they worked to digitize the country\u2019s public archives, bringing fragile documents, photographs and maps into the digital age and expanding global access to the nation\u2019s rich history.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"166\" height=\"221\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2018\/06\/Paul-Lovejoy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-253353\" style=\"width:177px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Paul Lovejoy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The website connected to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sierraleonepublicarchives.gov.sl\/Public\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital archive<\/a> launched on Aug. 25, and was supported by British Library Endangered Archives Programme funding secured by Lovejoy and Professor Suzanne Schwarz (University of Worcester), as well as funds from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/tubman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on Africa and its Diasporas<\/a> at 快播视频.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis launch marks a groundbreaking step in building Sierra Leone\u2019s digital capacity and strengthening access to the nation\u2019s archival resources,\u201d says Lovejoy. \u201c快播视频 has played a key role in advancing global archival research and digital preservation \u2013 dating back to the 18th century \u2013 through this project.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to securing funds for the project, York offered research and technical development by facilitating students\u2019 participation through work-study and <a href=\"https:\/\/studyoptions.students.yorku.ca\/opportunities-beyond-the-classroom\/research-at-york-ray\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research at York<\/a> programs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lovejoy also serves on the board of directors for Walk With Web, which developed the SLPA\u2019s digital platform under the leadership of CEO Kartikay Chadha, who worked as a researcher at York under Lovejoy\u2019s supervision and is now based at McGill University. The interdisciplinary collaboration supporting this project ensures the website meets international standards for archival research and sustainability.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis partnership exemplifies York\u2019s commitment to global engagement and knowledge mobilization,\u201d says Lovejoy. \u201cIt\u2019s about building capacity and creating long-term access to historical materials that are vital to Sierra Leone\u2019s cultural memory and are global in significance, including the strong conections between Sierra Leone and Nova Scotia, from where many early settlers in Freetown came.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SLPA website is designed to serve as a hub for research, education and cultural engagement. York and its partners are supporting workshops and training sessions to equip students and professionals in Sierra Leone with practical skills in archival management and digital stewardship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The launch of the website reflects a milestone in Sierra Leone\u2019s digital transformation, safeguarding government documents, private papers, maps and photographs that chronicle the nation\u2019s evolution.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project also highlights the important role that Sierra Leone has played historically in the centuries-long fight against slavery, says Lovejoy, and promotes global engagement on the issue of reparations for the descendants of those who suffered enslavement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By
