{"id":397738,"date":"2025-07-25T15:04:38","date_gmt":"2025-07-25T19:04:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/?p=397738"},"modified":"2025-07-27T19:51:41","modified_gmt":"2025-07-27T23:51:41","slug":"farming-methods-threaten-wild-bumblebees-york-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2025\/07\/25\/farming-methods-threaten-wild-bumblebees-york-study-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Farming methods threaten wild bumblebees, York study\u00a0finds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wild bumblebees across Canada face significant threats linked to agricultural methods, a new study out of 快播视频 finds.\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Published in&nbsp;<em>Conservation Science and Practice<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/csp2.70099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the study<\/a> examines how Canadian agricultural practices contribute to disease spillover from managed pollinator bees \u2013 used to support crop production \u2013 to wild bumblebees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"258\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2023\/09\/Gordon-Fitch.jpg\" alt=\"Gordon Fitch\" class=\"wp-image-341147\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gordon Fitch<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Faculty of Science<\/a> Professor <strong>Gordon Fitch<\/strong> along with York alum <strong>Amanda Liczner<\/strong> (PhD \u201920), now with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, and the late&nbsp;<strong>Sheila Colla<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/euc.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Faculty of Environmental &amp; Urban Change<\/a>, the study\u2019s findings raise urgent concerns for pollinator conservation. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research team mapped areas across Canada where wild bumblebees are both diverse and are at high risk for population decline from pathogens transmitted by managed bees. Parts of Alberta, B.C. and southern Ontario\u00a0\u2013 areas known for farming and rich ecosystems \u2013 were regions identified with the greatest risk for pathogen spillover in conservation priority areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBumblebees are essential pollinators and their populations are declining due to multiple stressors, including disease,\u201d says Fitch. \u201cDisease is a natural part of any ecosystem, but for bumblebees there is a big risk of new diseases spilling over from managed honeybee hives and wreaking havoc. Our findings show that many biodiversity hotspots for bumblebees overlap with areas of high disease spillover risk.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To mitigate these threats to wild bumblebees, the researchers recommend regular screening of both managed and wild bees for pathogens as well as implementing biosecurity measures in agricultural settings. Further to that, the study highlights the need for preventative measures, including national monitoring programs and improved sanitation practices to reduce the spread of disease. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur research reflects York\u2019s strong commitment to environmental sustainability and our work to protect biodiversity and ecosystem health,\u201d says Fitch. \u201cIt also continues Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2025\/07\/11\/passings-sheila-r-colla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sheila Colla\u2019s legacy<\/a> of combining rigorous science with advocacy to protect pollinators.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Known for her pioneering work in pollinator conservation, Colla was a tireless advocate for native bee species and their habitats.
