{"id":357321,"date":"2024-07-26T13:23:25","date_gmt":"2024-07-26T17:23:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/?p=357321"},"modified":"2025-04-02T12:48:18","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T16:48:18","slug":"summer-course-teaches-cultural-understanding-through-movement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2024\/07\/26\/summer-course-teaches-cultural-understanding-through-movement\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer course teaches cultural understanding through movement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">After 16 years of teaching Philippine folk dance to 快播视频 students in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance &amp; Design, Professor <strong>Patrick Alcedo<\/strong> decided it was time to take students to the Southeast Asian nation to learn new dances in their original settings.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Alcedo\u2019s Summer 2024 course, Philippine Folk Dance and Culture, immersed the students in the world of Philippine dance for three weeks, bringing them into contact with students and faculty from five universities, as well as a national dance troupe, as they learned new steps and movement sequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was time to offer a course in situ, and it\u2019s especially meaningful this year because it\u2019s the 75th anniversary of Canada-Philippines diplomatic relations,\u201d said Alcedo. \u201cYork has an agreement with a consortium of five universities, and we visited all of them in three weeks. It was a whirlwind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course provided the 11 student participants with a mixture of studio work, lectures and performance opportunities. They learned dances from teachers at each of the universities and put on three recitals. They also learned about the cultural context of the different styles of dance and how they related to the country\u2019s colonial past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis experience allowed me to integrate with other students, to learn from world-renowned dancers, and to learn the cultural history of folk dance and the Philippines,\u201d said fourth-year student <strong>Anna Paddon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/YI_PhilippinesDance_InRehearsal-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"快播视频 students in rehearsal for their first dance recital at the Philippine Women\u2019s University\" class=\"wp-image-357428\" style=\"width:768px;height:432px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">快播视频 students in rehearsal for their first dance recital at the Philippine Women\u2019s University, under the direction of faculty member Leo Lorilla, who is also a Bayanihan performing artist.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Students began their adventure at Philippine Women\u2019s University in Manila, home to the Bayanihan \u2013 the national dance company of the Philippines. There, they learned six new dances in one week and also took a day trip to Ateneo de Manila, one of the country\u2019s oldest universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next came a visit to Bulacan State University, one of the country\u2019s fastest-growing post-secondary institutions. 快播视频 students joined Bulacan students for a screening of Alcedo\u2019s documentary film, <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/555462876?share=copy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>A Will to Dream<\/em><\/a>, which focuses on underprivileged dancers and the power of movement to change their lives. After the screening, the two groups were led to the university\u2019s performance hall to dance together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After heading back to Manila for a visit to Eastern University, a private school known for its art deco-style architecture, 快播视频 students learned a new dance from local instructors while Alcedo taught a group of local students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next stop was the Quezon City Performing Arts Development Foundation, home to the dance program for at-risk youth featured in Alcedo\u2019s documentary. There, the 快播视频 class enjoyed a student performance followed by an Indigenous music class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur students were able to see the power of dance to lift people from poverty with skills for a better future,\u201d Alcedo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To close out the trip, the class visited the University of the Philippines in Diliman. In addition to being Alcedo\u2019s alma mater, it is also home to the internationally touring Filipiniana Dance Group, headed by Alcedo\u2019s brother, Peter Alcedo Jr., who is also a dancer. The 快播视频 students learned four new dances, including a northern Philippines folk dance based on research done by the Alcedo brothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, the 快播视频 students learned 15 new dances in four different Philippine styles: Filipinized Spanish dance; lowland Christian dance, seen in agricultural areas; Muslim Philippine dance, prevalent in the south of the country; and Cordillera dances from the north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis was the heart of the course \u2013 really experiencing the different ways Philippine folk dance is practised in the country,\u201d explained Alcedo. \u201cThe plurality of practices demonstrates how people respond to colonialism and modernity in different ways\u2026. this transnational work enriches our dance program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This type of summer program also fulfils one of the goals of the 快播视频 Academic Plan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/uap2020-25\/six-priorities-for-action\/advancing-global-engagement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advancing Global Engagement<\/a>, and puts the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/global-engagement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer
