{"id":352334,"date":"2024-04-03T12:40:42","date_gmt":"2024-04-03T16:40:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/?p=352334"},"modified":"2025-07-09T10:42:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T14:42:11","slug":"passings-robert-murdie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2024\/04\/03\/passings-robert-murdie\/","title":{"rendered":"Passings: Robert Murdie"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Professor Emeritus <strong>Robert \u201cBob\u201d Murdie<\/strong>, who spent almost his entire career with the Department of Geography at 快播视频, passed away at the age of 84.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After joining York\u2019s Department of Geography in 1968, Murdie enjoyed a long career as a dedicated teacher, an enthusiastic graduate supervisor, and a leading figure in Canadian urban and social geography \u2013 focusing especially on social housing and immigration studies by providing insight into the immigrant housing experience in Canada and the challenges experienced by newcomers.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"348\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2024\/04\/Bob-Murdie-e1712150578859.jpg\" alt=\"Bob Murdie\" class=\"wp-image-352335\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bob Murdie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cHis work on social and economic indicators within the various neighbourhoods of metropolitan Toronto placed him squarely in the vanguard among those who laboured to bring depth and clarity to our understanding of the spatial dynamics of city growth,\u201d says <strong>John Urquhart Marshall<\/strong>, a former Department of Geography colleague of Murdie\u2019s. \u201cEqually valuable are his later contributions regarding the impact of municipal policies upon housing development and immigrant absorption.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe did extraordinary research about urban housing markets. In 1992, he was one of the first to call attention to growing waiting lists for Toronto social housing, as tenants could not afford alternative rental or owned accommodation and stayed longer than any policymaker had anticipated,\u201d says Professor Emerita of Geography <strong>Valerie Preston<\/strong>. \u201cHe did seminal research about the housing trajectories of immigrants and refugees that is incredibly timely right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Murdie\u2019s research interests led him to travel to various cities in Europe and to spend time as a guest researcher in Sweden and Amsterdam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also was enthusiastic about furthering others\u2019 work and \u2013 in particular \u2013 enjoyed mentoring and encouraging his graduate students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe was a wonderful friend, a keen researcher and a superb teacher. He enriched the lives of thousands of undergraduate and graduate students in the Geography Department,\u201d remembers Professor Emeritus <strong>William Found<\/strong>, a colleague of Murdie\u2019s at York for over 50 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If desired, donations in his memory can be made to the <a href=\"http:\/\/woodgreen.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Woodgreen
