{"id":349301,"date":"2024-01-30T15:50:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-30T20:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/?p=349301"},"modified":"2025-04-02T12:41:44","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T16:41:44","slug":"a-message-from-the-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2024\/01\/30\/a-message-from-the-president\/","title":{"rendered":"A message from the president"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dear York community,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of our students, faculty, instructors and staff continue to be heavily impacted by the ongoing war in the Middle East, the resulting displacement and the humanitarian crises that are unfolding. The loss of life and uncertainty about friends, family and respected colleagues is particularly painful for many of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the challenging times we are living in, it is increasingly important that we are attentive to our shared priority: <em>Living Well Together<\/em>, as outlined in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/uap2020-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University Academic Plan (UAP) 2020-2025<\/a>. Approved by University Senate, the UAP affirms that: \u201cMaking positive change requires that all members of our diverse community feel welcomed into a sense of belonging, common purpose, and shared responsibility to support and enrich each other\u2019s work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>York\u2019s commitment to support and uphold academic freedom, and freedom of expression within the limits of the law, stands. While there will be some courses and seminars where dialogue on world events could be relevant, this should occur in a respectful manner that allows for the expression of diverse perspectives in an inclusive learning environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We must advise the community that York\u2019s senior administration does not find the recent email communication from CUPE 3903, which provided teaching assistants (TAs) across the University with \u201cA Toolkit on Teaching Palestine\u201d calling for diversion of their teaching from the planned curriculum, to be in accordance with the rightful expectations of the University as an employer, the needs of the students and the legitimate claims of the community. The University\u2019s senior administration has written directly to CUPE 3903 leadership to discuss this important matter especially in light of the rights of students to have access to their course curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who have concerns about their seminars should contact the course director, or the dean of the relevant Faculty. La perte de vies humaines et l\u2019incertitude planant sur nos amis, nos proches et nos coll\u00e8gues estim\u00e9s sont particuli\u00e8rement douloureuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durant cette p\u00e9riode difficile, il est primordial de veiller \u00e0 notre bien-\u00eatre commun, autrement dit l\u2019objectif <em>Bien vivre ensemble<\/em> expos\u00e9 dans le Plan acad\u00e9mique de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 (PAU) 2020-2025. Le PAU, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 approuv\u00e9 par le S\u00e9nat de l\u2019Universit\u00e9, \u00e9nonce&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;Pour apporter des changements positifs, il faut que tous les membres de notre communaut\u00e9 diversifi\u00e9e \u00e9prouvent un sentiment d\u2019appartenance, de but commun et de responsabilit\u00e9 partag\u00e9e afin de soutenir et d\u2019enrichir le travail de chaque personne&nbsp;\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>York maintient son engagement \u00e0 soutenir et \u00e0 d\u00e9fendre la libert\u00e9 universitaire et d\u2019expression dans les limites de la loi. Un dialogue sur les \u00e9v\u00e9nements mondiaux peut s\u2019av\u00e9rer pertinent dans le cadre de certains cours et travaux pratiques; il doit toutefois se d\u00e9rouler de mani\u00e8re respectueuse et permettre l\u2019expression de diverses perspectives dans un environnement d\u2019apprentissage inclusif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>R\u00e9cemment, le SCFP 3903 a fourni par courriel aux auxiliaires d'enseignement de l'Universit\u00e9 une bo\u00eete \u00e0 outils nomm\u00e9e \u00ab&nbsp;Teaching&nbsp;Palestine&nbsp;\u00bb&nbsp;appelant \u00e0&nbsp;d\u00e9tourner&nbsp;leur enseignement du programme pr\u00e9vu. La haute direction de York ne consid\u00e8re pas cette communication conforme aux attentes fond\u00e9es de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 en tant qu\u2019employeur, aux besoins de la population \u00e9tudiante et aux revendications l\u00e9gitimes de la communaut\u00e9. Elle a \u00e9crit directement aux dirigeants du SCFP&nbsp;3903 pour aborder avec eux cette question capitale, notamment du point de vue des droits des membres de la population \u00e9tudiante \u00e0 acc\u00e9der \u00e0 leur programme d\u2019\u00e9tudes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nous invitons les \u00e9tudiants et \u00e9tudiantes qui \u00e9prouvent des inqui\u00e9tudes concernant leurs travaux pratiques \u00e0 contacter leur directeur\/directrice de cours ou le doyen\/la doyenne de leur facult\u00e9.
