{"id":335995,"date":"2023-06-09T13:12:35","date_gmt":"2023-06-09T18:12:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/?p=335995"},"modified":"2025-04-02T12:32:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T16:32:10","slug":"four-projects-receive-funding-through-yorks-sustainability-innovation-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2023\/06\/09\/four-projects-receive-funding-through-yorks-sustainability-innovation-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"Four projects receive funding through York\u2019s Sustainability Innovation Fund"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A selection committee from the President\u2019s Sustainability Council identified projects that advance climate action at the University for the second round of funding from York\u2019s Sustainability Innovation Fund (SIF).&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sustainability Innovation Fund provides funding to support campus sustainability projects that help build a culture and practice of sustainability at 快播视频 and advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This round of funding awarded over $50,000 to projects that contribute to the University\u2019s goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 45 per cent by 2030 and achieving net zero and advancing SDG 13 (Climate Action).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winning projects reflect various ways to utilize the campus as a living lab and address direct or indirect emissions through activities such as commuting, energy use, food consumption, waste management, behaviour change, awareness and engagement, and nature-based solutions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy supporting these projects, we are making significant strides towards creating a more sustainable community at 快播视频 and beyond,\u201d said <strong>Mike Layton<\/strong>, chief sustainability officer. \u201cWe\u2019re also breaking down financial barriers to empower students, staff and faculty to become agents of positive change and take meaningful steps to reduce our impact on the planet.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The four winning projects are:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Living Learning Community \u2013 Sustainability<\/strong>\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Project team:\u202f\u200b<strong>Aaron Brown<\/strong> and <strong>Melanie Howard<\/strong>\u200b, Residence Life, Division of Students\u202f\u200b\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Residence Life will pilot a Living Learning Community (LLC) specific to sustainability during the 2023-24 academic year.\u202fThe program seeks to address SDG 12 (Ensure sustainable production and consumption patterns) and 13 (Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>快播视频 Composting Centre\u202f&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Project lead: <strong>John Simoulidis<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Project team: <strong>Andrew Maxwell<\/strong> (Lassonde School of Engineering), Dean <strong>J.J. McMurtry<\/strong> (Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies (LA&amp;PS)), Dean <strong>Alice Hovorka<\/strong> (Faculty of Environmental &amp; Urban Change (EUC)), <strong>Tom Watt<\/strong> (Ancillary Services), <strong>Calvin Lakhan<\/strong> (EUC), <strong>Mark Winfield<\/strong> (EUC), <strong>Karl Karvonen<\/strong> (Facilities Services), <strong>Sabine Dreher<\/strong> (Glendon College), <strong>Nicolas Cabal<\/strong> (student), <strong>Ronon Smith <\/strong>(student), <strong>Sabrina de Losada Casab<\/strong> (student)\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This project began through the first round of SIF. It will continue to develop an on-site composting centre to divert organic waste away from landfills, process it on site and turn it into useful compost that can be applied at Maloca Garden (Keele) or Glendon Garden, two spaces well situated as \u201dliving labs.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Green Career Fair: Exploring Climate Careers to Achieve Net Zero\u202f&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Project leads: <strong>Lauren Castelino<\/strong>, <strong>Joanne Huy<\/strong> and <strong>Rosanna Chowdury<\/strong>\u202f(EUC)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This project will host an annual Green Career Fair at 快播视频 to engage students and GTA youth. The fair will lead discussions on transitioning to net-zero emissions and showcase green career paths and organizations championing initiatives towards this goal. It aims to prepare underrepresented youth for green careers through nurturing a stronger sense of connection, inclusion and well-being.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Determining the merits of large battery electricity storage at 快播视频<\/strong>\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Project lead: <strong>Tim Hampton<\/strong> (EUC)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Project team: <strong>Mark Winfield<\/strong> (EUC), <strong>Hany Farag<\/strong> (Lassonde), <strong>Steven Prince<\/strong> (Facilities Services)\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This project will assess the desirability (environmental impact reduction), feasibility (fit with existing campus infrastructure and staffing) and viability (whether the system will reduce overall costs) of a large battery storage system at 快播视频.\u202f&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The next round of SIF funding is planned for Fall 2023.
