{"id":329717,"date":"2023-02-24T17:01:46","date_gmt":"2023-02-24T22:01:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/?p=329717"},"modified":"2025-07-30T15:10:58","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T19:10:58","slug":"york-faculty-programs-win-minsters-awards-of-excellence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2023\/02\/24\/york-faculty-programs-win-minsters-awards-of-excellence\/","title":{"rendered":"Escape rooms and VR: York faculty, programs win provincial honour"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sponsored by Ontario\u2019s Ministry of Colleges and Universities, the Minister\u2019s Awards of Excellence highlight the incredible work of professors, instructors, staff and graduate students on campus, in the community and beyond.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The awards program began in 2020 and today highlights the exceptional performance of universities and colleges in five categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Everyday Heroes: Faculty and staff who have stepped up and made a difference during the 2021-22 academic year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Future-Proofing Ontario\u2019s Students: Faculty and staff who have led the way in adapting programs that support new ways of learning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Equality of Opportunity: Faculty and staff who have excelled at creating opportunities in postsecondary education for marginalized and underrepresented groups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Faculty and staff who are working with industry and business to drive economic development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rising Star: Graduate students, faculty and staff who are under 35 and are making a difference in education, inspiring students or carrying out innovative research in the postsecondary education sector. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since it was announced on Feb. 7 that the 2021-22 winners had been finalized, several ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ faculty and initiatives have received recognition for their exceptional work. Undergraduate nursing programs rely on experiential clinical experiences that are required for professional licensure \u2013 something that became difficult during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The professors\u2019 solution used the concept of cooperative gameplay to create virtual escape rooms that simulated clinical scenarios in which students worked together to gather clues and solve puzzles that facilitated priority-setting, clinical reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Motivated by the desire to help students learn the structure and behavior of complex molecules, the team leveraged the unique capabilities of VR to teach students about these molecules in a completely new, immersive and engaging, as well as accessible and equitable, way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team developed a variety of interactive VR activities designed to help students manipulate molecules and research crucial aspects of the structure underlying their reactivity and biological function. The ability to mentally manipulate complex objects in three-dimensional space, known as \u201c3D literacy,\u201d is a crucial skill for all students majoring in STEM disciplines, and it is highly valued in the modern science and technology work environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The kindergarten to industry (k2i) academy<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"290\" height=\"290\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Lassonde-LCD-screen-image.jpg\" alt=\"Lassonde School of Engineering building\" class=\"wp-image-294191\" style=\"width:197px;height:197px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2021\/10\/Lassonde-LCD-screen-image.jpg 290w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2021\/10\/Lassonde-LCD-screen-image-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The Minister\u2019s award category Equality of Opportunity acknowledges faculty and staff who have excelled at creating opportunities in post-secondary education for marginalized and underrepresented groups. Among the winners this year was the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/lassonde.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lassonde School of Engineering<\/a>\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/lassonde.yorku.ca\/about\/our-values\/kindergarten-to-industry-k2i-academy\" target=\"_blank\">k2i academy<\/a>, which was recognized for its work inspiring underrepresented youth in STEM, which includes initiatives like <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/2022\/12\/02\/lassondes-k2i-academy-introduces-teacher-resources-for-de-streaming-grade-9-science-in-ontario\/\" target=\"_blank\">de-streaming Grade 9 science<\/a>, shepherding its <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/2022\/08\/24\/lassondes-k2i-academy-launches-new-indigenous-engineering-technology-innovation-by-design-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indigenous Engineering &amp; Innovation by Design<\/a> program, and moving forward with its forthcoming launch of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/2023\/02\/22\/lassonde-receives-funding-to-launch-stem-program-for-black-youth\/\" target=\"_blank\">a STEM program<\/a> for Black
