After undertaking a strenuous mid-term evaluation, <a href=\"https:\/\/vista.info.yorku.ca\/\">VISTA<\/a> was recognized for its role in positioning 快播视频 as a world-class destination for interdisciplinary vision science research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVISTA is leading the way in the research and development of vision science that will have a positive societal impact on the lives of Canadians,\u201d says <strong>Amir Asif<\/strong>, vice-president, research and innovation (VPRI). \u201cThanks to the collaborative efforts of faculty and staff, the interdisciplinary program continues to advance new knowledge in vision science and translate successful research into novel applications to benefit humanity and a brighter future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Amir-Asif.jpg\" alt=\"Amir Asif\" class=\"wp-image-286231\" width=\"269\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2021\/03\/Amir-Asif.jpg 359w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2021\/03\/Amir-Asif-318x400.jpg 318w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><figcaption>Amir Asif<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The CFREF review panel and board praised VISTA for the calibre of its interdisciplinary research projects, its capacity to attract high-profile senior researchers and promising junior faculty, its proactive training programs, and for its strong research translation and commercialization outcomes. The program was commended for its commitment for integrating an administrative structure into the fabric of the University\u2019s vision for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following are some of VISTA\u2019s key accomplishments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/2020\/07\/12\/professor-laurie-wilcox-becomes-president-of-vision-sciences-society\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/2020\/07\/12\/professor-laurie-wilcox-becomes-president-of-vision-sciences-society\/\" target=\"_blank\">Laurie Wilcox<\/a><\/strong>, professor of psychology and biology and a core member of VISTA, was elected president of the Vision Sciences Society, the premiere annual international vision science conference.<\/li><li>The pan-University focus of VISTA has resulted in innovative, multidisciplinary research across faculties and disciplines.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/2020\/04\/08\/jeffrey-d-schall-appointed-inaugural-scientific-director-of-the-york-visual-neurophysiology-centre\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/2020\/04\/08\/jeffrey-d-schall-appointed-inaugural-scientific-director-of-the-york-visual-neurophysiology-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jeffrey D. Schall<\/strong> <\/a>was appointed inaugural scientific director of the York Visual Neurophysiology Centre.<\/li><li>VISTA support and leadership is contributing to the Neuroscience Facility expansion at the Sherman Health Sciences Centre at the University\u2019s Keele Campus.<\/li><li>CFREF funding has also had a major impact on graduate scholarships and fellowships at York: with four master\u2019s, eight doctoral scholarships plus five postdoctoral Fellowships, bringing the total to 110 such awards, which is the largest scholarship and Fellowship program at 快播视频. This expansive support of graduate and postdoctoral expertise has expanded research programs for VISTA faculty and enhanced the University\u2019s international reputation for vision sciences.<\/li><li>VISTA continues to deliver on its promise of applied internships for York trainees with 21 undergraduate and graduate <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mitacs.ca\/en\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.mitacs.ca\/en\" target=\"_blank\">Mitacs<\/a> internships in the last year, including seven new research training awards and two new business strategy internships related to COVID-19.<\/li><li>VISTA has added five additional affiliate members, which serves to enhance 快播视频\u2019s international reputation and reach to other institutions.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More about VISTA<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/category\/news\/2016\/09\/yorks-world-leading-vision-research-program-receives-canadas-premiere-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">快播视频 was awarded $33 million over seven years from CFREF<\/a>, the largest government grant awarded in the institution\u2019s history. CFREF helps Canadian postsecondary institutions excel globally in research areas that create long-term economic advantages for Canada. Institutions are competitively selected based on their ability to translate key strengths into world-leading capabilities. CFREF is a tri-agency initiative of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Institutes of Health Research<\/a>. The CFREF award represents a monumental shift forward in vision science and has led to new applications spanning handheld devices, clinical diagnosis, art exhibits and even outer space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VISTA, an initiative of the Office of the Vice-President Research &amp; Innovation, was funded based on its demonstrated existing research capacity and internationally recognized strengths in vision research. Since its inception, VISTA has worked in vision research related areas, spanning five faculties: Lassonde School of Engineering, Faculty of Health, Faculty of Science, School of Arts, Media, Performance &amp; Design, and the Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VISTA's mission is to advance vision science through computational and biological research perspectives, and to produce applications that generate positive health, societal, technological and economic impacts for Canada and the world.
