{"id":250825,"date":"2018-02-21T15:39:10","date_gmt":"2018-02-21T20:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/?p=250825"},"modified":"2025-04-03T13:33:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T17:33:09","slug":"nisgaa-writer-jordan-abel-speaks-about-poetry-as-intervention-in-colonial-discourse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2018\/02\/21\/nisgaa-writer-jordan-abel-speaks-about-poetry-as-intervention-in-colonial-discourse\/","title":{"rendered":"Nisga'a writer Jordan Abel speaks about poetry as intervention in colonial discourse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>On Feb. 13, York\u2019s Canadian Writers in Person course presented Nisga\u2019a writer Jordan Abel reading from his poetry book\u00a0<\/em>Injun<em>.\u00a0York teaching assistant Dana Patrascu-Kingsley\u00a0sent the following report to\u00a0<\/em>YFile<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-250248\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2018\/02\/Injun-cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" \/>Nisga\u2019a writer Jordan Abel visited 快播视频 as part of the Canadian Writers in Person Series, to discuss and perform selections from his latest collection of poetry, <em>Injun<\/em>. He delivered his reading on Feb.13.<\/p>\n<p>Using the cut-up method, Abel compiled <em>Injun<\/em> out of 91 Western novels available online in the public domain. With his word processor\u2019s \u201cfind\u201d function, he searched for the word \u201cInjun\u201d in these texts, and then cut up and reassembled passages from the original texts into a long poem.<\/p>\n<p>His performance at York involved his \u201ctaking audio files and pulling them apart\u201d by remixing and distorting the sounds, to parallel the practices that went into the making of the book. In his audio performance of the poem, Abel re-created in a different medium those \u201cmoments of illegibility or inaudibility\u201d that readers experience when reading his book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m interested in Westerns because of the misrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in them\u2026 I was interested in finding out what makes up the contours of racism, what racism is, and how I can disrupt it,\u201d said Abel.<\/p>\n<p>This long poem and the additional notes and materials included in the volume represent an intervention in the colonial violence evident at the level of language.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_245430\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-245430\" class=\"size-full wp-image-245430\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2017\/09\/CWIP10Abel.jpg\" alt=\"Jordan Abel\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-245430\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jordan Abel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cMy writing is deeply impacted by the trajectory of colonial violence\u2026 There is a disruption of language and knowledge that happened in my family because of that trajectory of colonial violence,\u201d said Abel, who identifies as an intergenerational survivor of residential schools, and his work reflects on this personal and national history.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian poet Ken Babstock writes about this collection of poetry: \u201cJordan Abel has opened a space of disruption, lament, resistance, and inquiry\u2014a terrible, inverted singing that can undermine assumption, exposing \u2018soft\u2019 ideology<em>. Injun<\/em> isn\u2019t a record of past wrongs, but a present tense intervention. A necessary, confrontational beauty. The country needs <em>Injun<\/em> right up in its face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Writers in Person series readings are free and open to any member of the public.
