{"id":18207,"date":"2012-01-18T09:52:14","date_gmt":"2012-01-18T13:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/?p=18207"},"modified":"2025-04-02T08:48:21","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T12:48:21","slug":"two-york-departments-honour-their-top-undergraduates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2012\/01\/18\/two-york-departments-honour-their-top-undergraduates\/","title":{"rendered":"Two York departments honour their top undergraduates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>York\u2019s Department of Social Science and the Department of Communication Studies have\u00a0honoured the outstanding achievements of\u00a0undergraduate students at an annual awards ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0event took place in the private dining room at the Schulich Executive Centre, where Barbara Crow, associate dean of research at the Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies, welcomed students, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20120113\/AwardOne.jpg\" alt=\" Barbara Crow \" width=\"223\" height=\"245\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>families and faculty members as they gathered to celebrate the achievements of some of \u00a0¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ\u2019s top undergraduates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Right: Barbara Crow <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Overall, the departments distributed various awards in several interdisciplinary programs. Here is an overview of\u00a0the presentations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Professor Megan Davies presented the first award of the afternoon, the Founders Book Prize, to <strong>Marcela Slinin<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Gina Feldberg Prize, awarded in memory of the distinguished teaching record of Professor Gina Feldberg, was presented to the health and society major <strong>Alexandra MacAskill<\/strong> by Professor Rob Vipond.<\/li>\n<li>Professor Emeritus Carl Baar presented the Ellen Baar award, established in honour of his late wife Professor Ellen Baar, to two recipients: <strong>Theresa McGee <\/strong>and<strong> Hiam Kogiashvili-Amar<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20120113\/AwardTwo.jpg\" alt=\" Professor Emeritus Carl Baar announcing the recipients of the Ellen Baar Award\" width=\"129\" height=\"147\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>Right: Professor Emeritus Carl Baar announcing the recipients of the Ellen Baar Award<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kimberley White, the chair of the Department of Social Science, presented the Gordon Lowther Award to <strong>Jermain Virgo<\/strong> in recognition of his scoring the highest grade point average (GPA) among all first-year students in the department.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Christina Ransom<\/strong> was awarded the Lillian Lerman Book Prize by Professor Peggy Keall.<\/li>\n<li>Mary-Louise Craven, the undergraduate program director in the Department of Communication Studies, presented the Otto Friedman Award to <strong>Saba Haie<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>From the Department of Communication Studies, the Eric Koch Award, presented by Professor Emeritus Eric Koch himself, went to<strong> Carlos Desiderio Ulloa Abarzua<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Right: <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20120113\/AwardThree.jpg\" alt=\"Professor David Skinner (centre) presenting the Penny Joliffe Award to Nicole Goulding (left) and Kerrie-Ann Bernard\" width=\"204\" height=\"238\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>Professor David Skinner (centre) presenting the Penny Joliffe Award to Nicole Goulding (left)\u00a0and Kerrie-Ann Bernard<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>David Skinner, the chair of the Department of Communications, presented the Penny Joliffe Award to <strong>Nicole Goulding<\/strong> and <strong>Kerrie-Ann Bernard<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lindsay Moore<\/strong> was awarded the Reva Orlicky Award, presented by Professor Anne MacLennan.<\/li>\n<li>The recipient of the Dalton Kehoe Award was <strong>Jennifer Ramcharan<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Professor Reccia Mandelcorn presented the Jerry Durlak Award, in memory of Professor Durlak\u2019s unforgettable work in the Department of Communication Studies, to <strong>David Synard<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>On behalf of the African Studies Program, Professor Uwafiokun Idemudia awarded\u00a0the Esiri Dafiewhare Annual Scholarship to <strong>Chelsea Allen,<\/strong> and the Stevenson Scholarship in African Studies to <strong>Janice Anderson<\/strong> and <strong>Valerie Kitchen<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20120113\/AwardFour(1).jpg\" alt=\"Lindsay Moore with Professor Ann MacLennan\" width=\"141\" height=\"179\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>Right: Lindsay Moore with Professor Ann MacLennan<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Business &amp; Society Program awarded the Alterna Social Economy Scholarship to <strong>Samantha Lal<\/strong>, presented by Professor Lynne Campbell.<\/li>\n<li>The Business &amp; Society Honours Award was given to <strong>Maie Elamry<\/strong>, presented by Professor Mark Peacock.<\/li>\n<li>Professor James Williams presented two awards on behalf of the Criminology Program: the Criminology Honours Scholarship was given to both <strong>Julian Di Bartolomeo<\/strong> and <strong>Ashley Hayward<\/strong>, and the Criminology 1650 Book Prize to <strong>Kristen Hayward<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The International Development Studies Honours Award, presented by Vivana Patroni, went to <strong>Alastair Woods<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Professor Clive Forrester presented the Latin American &amp; Society Award presented to <strong>Theresa McGee<\/strong>, the Jane Banfield Award to <strong>Shelby Fenster<\/strong> and the Law &amp; Society Honours Prize to <strong>Josie Vaccaro<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Professor Stephanie Ross presented two awards from the Work &amp; Labour Studies Program; the Neil Reimer Award went to <strong>David Marincola<\/strong> and the Labour Studies Student Achievement Award, to <strong>Daiana Dumitru<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Professor Jay Goulding awarded <strong>Julien Morneau<\/strong> with the Social &amp; Political Thought Award.<\/li>\n<li>The final awards were presented by Professor Lisa Drummond to students in the Urban Studies Program.
