{"id":179474,"date":"2013-01-22T17:33:44","date_gmt":"2013-01-22T22:33:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/?p=179474"},"modified":"2025-04-02T09:35:51","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T13:35:51","slug":"public-symposium-puts-ontarios-human-rights-system-under-the-microscope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2013\/01\/22\/public-symposium-puts-ontarios-human-rights-system-under-the-microscope\/","title":{"rendered":"Public symposium puts Ontario's Human Rights System under the microscope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was a little over two months ago that independent reviewer Andrew Pinto\u2019s <i>Report of the Ontario Human Rights Review 2012<\/i> was released by Ontario\u2019s Attorney General. \u00a0The 233-page report assessed the impact of changes made <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-179498\" style=\"margin: 8px\" alt=\"arajOsgoode\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2013\/01\/arajOsgoode.jpg\" width=\"145\" height=\"200\" \/>to Ontario\u2019s human rights system in 2008 under the McGuinty government's Bill 107.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Raj Anand<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This Friday, Jan.25,\u00a0Osgoode Hall Law School will host a public symposium at which Pinto, a lawyer with Pinto Wray James LLP, will provide an overview of his report.\u00a0 Commentators will be lawyer Raj Anand\u00a0of Weir Foulds LLP, who is one of Osgoode\u2019s McMurtry Visiting Clinical Fellows this term, and Mary Cornish of Cavalluzzo Hayes Shilton McIntyre &amp; Cornish LLP.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-179500\" style=\"margin: 8px\" alt=\"bryderOsgoode\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2013\/01\/bryderOsgoode.jpg\" width=\"145\" height=\"200\" \/>Bruce Ryder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition, there will be two panel discussions \u2013 one focused on the 2006 amendments to the Human Rights Code and the promotion of access to justice, and the other on measuring outcomes after the 2006 amendments.\u00a0 The symposium will take place in Room 1014\u00a0at Osgoode from 8.30am to 3pm.\u00a0The event poster, a full program and the papers to be presented at the symposium can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osgoode.yorku.ca\/node\/22220\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\"The Pinto Review and the transformation of the Ontario human rights system represent a significant milestone in the development of human rights protections, and I am looking <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-179507\" style=\"margin: 8px\" alt=\"Faraday_Fay\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2013\/01\/Faraday_Fay-200x300.jpg\" width=\"140\" height=\"210\" \/>forward to the mix of academic, legal and practical insights at the symposium,\" said Osgoode Hall Law School\u00a0Dean Lorne Sossin, who is also a participant in the symposium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fay Faraday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\"Osgoode is proud to be hosting this symposium and looks forward to serving as a catalyst for the public debate that these reforms to the human rights system merit,\" added Sossin.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Pinto, Anand, Cornish and Sossin, other speakers will include Osgoode Professors Faisal Bhabha, Sonia Lawrence and Bruce Ryder; York Professor Lesley <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-179499 alignright\" style=\"margin: 8px\" alt=\"bfaisalOsgoode\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2013\/01\/bfaisalOsgoode.jpg\" width=\"145\" height=\"200\" \/>Jacobs;
