She was about to receive her undergraduate degree from York\u2019s Faculty of Education with a major in kinesiology and health science. What was missing, however, was her boyfriend Alex Vasquez. \u201cWe came together and I was looking for him in the audience.\u201d But she couldn\u2019t locate him. \u201cI was texting him, wondering where he was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110620\/proposalTwo.jpg\" alt=\"Alex Vasquez proposes to his sweetheart, graduating student Maria Salcedo, onstage during Friday's Spring 2011 Convocation ceremony\" width=\"300\" height=\"407\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"9\" vspace=\"9\" \/>Left: Alex Vasquez proposes to his sweetheart, graduating student Maria Salcedo, onstage during Friday's Spring 2011 Convocation ceremony<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She didn\u2019t have to wait long to find out. As Salcedo crossed the stage as a new graduate to shake hands with York Chancellor Roy McMurtry and President &amp; Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri, Vasquez appeared from the wings, threw off the gown he was using as a disguise and bent down on one knee in front of her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was just so ecstatic,\u201d she said. \u201cI thought, 'what are you doing here [onstage]?'\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a ring in one hand and a microphone in the other, Vasquez told Salcedo that he couldn\u2019t ever imagine being without her. \u201cLove of my life. I thank God every single day that he has blessed me with the most beautiful\u00a0woman I could ever imagine being with. I love you with all my heart. You stole me with the first kiss. Will you marry me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Salcedo said later she couldn\u2019t hear a word of what Vasquez was saying because of the loud cheering coming from her classmates, but knew what was going on and nodded a tearful yes. \u201cI knew when he stopped talking, that was when I should say yes,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was a complete surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" summary=\"\" width=\"450\" cellspacing=\"8\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Vasquez, a truck mechanic, designed the ring himself \u2013 18-carat gold\u00a0and frameless with a diamond that is almost point nine in size. \u201cI\u2019m bankrupt now,\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown to Salcedo, her boyfriend had been planning this moment for a month, ever since he attended a semi-formal event with her and her classmates. \u201cI just saw how much school and her friends meant to her,\u201d he said, convinced convocation was the perfect setting for his proposal.\u00a0He said he was grateful for the assistance he received from convocation staff.<\/p>\n<p>\"I feel like a celebrity,\u201d\u00a0Vasquez said as\u00a0he waited backstage for his big moment, with University staff fussing over him and taking his picture. But he added nervously:\u00a0\u201cI hope she answers before she starts to cry.\u201d \u00a0In the end, he was\u00a0delighted to have pulled it off. \u201cI was so happy when she said yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for Salcedo, she thinks it\u2019s great because she will always have two reasons to celebrate June 17.<\/p>\n<p><em>By Sandra McLean, YFile
