{"id":16962,"date":"2011-05-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-06T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/2011\/05\/06\/nursing-professors-win-provincial-teaching-awards\/"},"modified":"2025-04-02T08:44:05","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T12:44:05","slug":"nursing-professors-win-provincial-teaching-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2011\/05\/06\/nursing-professors-win-provincial-teaching-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Nursing professors win provincial teaching awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two York nursing professors have won provincial awards for innovative and excellent teaching.<\/p>\n<p>At its fourth annual awards ceremony Saturday, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cou.on.ca\/news\/media-releases\/cou\/excellence,-innovation-and-passion-in-nursing-educ.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Council of Ontario Universities Programs in Nursing<\/a> (COUPN) presented Patricia Bradley with the Teaching Innovation Award and Christine Jonas-Simpson with the Excellence in Teaching Award.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" summary=\"\" width=\"200\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"8\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110506\/coupn.jpg\" alt=\"York nursing Professors Christine Jonas-Simpson (left) and Pat Bradley\" width=\"450\" height=\"395\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Above: York nursing Professors Christine Jonas-Simpson (left) and Pat Bradley<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The awards are presented each year to nursing faculty, students, staff and health program partners from across the province who have made outstanding contributions to nursing education. Nominations are made by students, staff and faculty members of the province\u2019s nursing programs. COUPN presented 10 awards this year.<\/p>\n<p>Bradley, coordinator of York\u2019s Internationally Educated Nurses Program, joined York\u2019s School of Nursing in 2007 and brings decades of experience to her teaching. She won recognition for her innovative use of multimedia and online tools to help her students succeed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Bradley is always thinking, teaching and learning,\u201d wrote Andria Phillips, a graduate student whom Bradley supervised in a teaching practicum, in her citation. \u201cWhether it\u2019s linking thoughts to pop culture, [asking] if changes can be made to improve the situation, offering guidance in finding solutions or linking your issue to current issues\/best practices, she always has something new and interesting to offer to a conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bradley \u201chas made exceptional contributions in the classroom, to student supervision and to the overall teaching culture in the School of Nursing and the Faculty of Health,\u201d wrote her nominator, Professor Karin Page-Cutrara, undergraduate program director in York\u2019s School of Nursing. \u201cHer pedagogical practices in online environments that support graduate student engagement, learning and success, and her innovative programming devised to assist undergraduate students in writing the Canadian Registered Nurses Examination are of particular note.\u201d Page-Cutrara also cited among Bradley\u2019s teaching-related contributions her participation in the Faculty of Health\u2019s Health, Leadership &amp; Learning Network, research at York, and national and international conferences.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/people\/index.php?dept=&amp;mid=194235\">Jonas-Simpson<\/a>, who has taught undergraduate and graduate nursing courses at York since 2007, was recognized for demonstrating excellence and making consistent efforts to propel the critical-thinking abilities of her students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can confidently say that as an educator, Professor Jonas-Simpson has had the most significant and lasting impact towards my development as a professional nurse,\u201d wrote undergraduate Catherine Valle in the citation. \u201cShe has the incredible ability to create a learning environment that is innovative, supportive and inspiring. [She] inspires her students through her lived experiences of nursing while connecting them to the theoretical foundations of the course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Colleagues also recognized Jonas-Simpson\u2019s passion and dedication to enhancing nursing education. Professor Ros Woodhouse, academic director of the Centre for the Support of Teaching, wrote: \u201cI have worked with individuals, groups and programs in health and health professional education for over 15 years (at the University of Toronto, Queen\u2019s University and ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ). In my experience, Dr. Jonas-Simpson demonstrates outstanding commitment to her students\u2019 learning and excellence in every aspect of her teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Submitted by Rebecca Bitton,
