{"id":15650,"date":"2010-10-20T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-20T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/2010\/10\/20\/ready-set-mentor-event-pairs-students-with-accomplished-alumni\/"},"modified":"2025-04-01T15:07:24","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T19:07:24","slug":"ready-set-mentor-event-pairs-students-with-accomplished-alumni","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2010\/10\/20\/ready-set-mentor-event-pairs-students-with-accomplished-alumni\/","title":{"rendered":"Ready...Set...Mentor! event pairs students with accomplished alumni"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you could bend the ear of a CEO or media guru for five minutes, what would you discuss?<\/p>\n<p>This is the question 47 York students asked themselves in preparation for the third annual Ready\u2026Set\u2026Mentor! event, held in York Hall on the Glendon campus.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the popular concept of speed dating, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/special\/ready_set_mentor_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ready...Set...Mentor!<\/a> pairs York students with industry leaders from business, media, arts, entertainment, law and government for one hour of five-minute, one-on-one sessions. Jill Dempsey (BA \u201904), host and newsreader of \"Metro Morning\", emceed the event and served as a mentor.\u00a0Dempsey, the show\u2019s longtime news writer and newsreader, majored in political science as a mature student in the former Atkinson Faculty of Liberal &amp; Professional Studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a big supporter of mentorship, so when I was asked to get involved, I didn\u2019t even have to think about it,\u201d says Dempsey. \u201cI urge students here tonight to take the advice given by the mentors and I hope that when the time comes, York students of today will return the favour for the next generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students appeared to heed Dempsey\u2019s advice, engaging enthusiastically with mentors and sticking <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20101020\/McRobertsKrembilMarcus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"243\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>around for extended networking after the sessions ended.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Left: Glendon Principal Kenneth McRoberts with mentor Robert Krembil (MBA '71, Hon.
