{"id":15595,"date":"2010-10-07T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-07T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/2010\/10\/07\/new-program-helps-meet-ontarios-nursing-needs\/"},"modified":"2025-04-01T15:07:15","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T19:07:15","slug":"new-program-helps-meet-ontarios-nursing-needs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2010\/10\/07\/new-program-helps-meet-ontarios-nursing-needs\/","title":{"rendered":"New program helps meet Ontario's nursing needs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new admission option for York's Master of Science in Nursing Program will increase access to education and professional opportunities for Ontario nurses.<\/p>\n<p>This fall,\u00a0during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.2010iynurse.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Year of the Nurse<\/a>,\u00a0the Faculty of Graduate Studies begins recruiting, for the first time, nurses without a bachelor\u2019s degree. \"The new, unique admission option provides increased access to the knowledge and skills necessary for nurse leaders to influence the future of nursing and health care in Ontario,\" says Professor\u00a0Martha Rogers, program director for the Master of Science in Nursing (MScN) Program.<\/p>\n<p>York\u2019s MScN, housed in the School of Nursing in York's Faculty of Health, was created to provide registered nurses who want to advance their careers with a solid foundation of research skills and an ability to critically analyze and contribute to life-enhancing change in the health care system. Rogers says the University is again answering a growing demand for healthcare services and practitioners\u00a0that <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20101007\/nurse_wikipedia_image.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"161\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>focus on the experiences of human beings in a way that respects patients' values and choices about health and quality of life.The new alternate admission option helps fill that gap.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Left: The program offers an opportunity for nurses without a bachelor's degree\u00a0to pursue graduate studies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As the only program of its kind in Ontario, it will provide a direct, three-year path to the online MScN for exceptional RNs who do not have an undergraduate nursing degree. The new admission option provides a fast track\u00a0for registered nurses who have been practising for many years and have a diploma in nursing.<\/p>\n<p>\"The School of Nursing at ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ has long been lauded for its innovative programming and responsiveness to the needs of current and future nurses,\u201d says Rogers. \u201cIn addition to our well-regarded Internationally Educated Nurses bridging program, our Second Entry program for people who hold undergraduate degrees in areas other than nursing, and our online masters program, this alternate admission to the MScN for RNs who do not hold a baccalaureate degree adds another option\u00a0to York\u2019s repertoire of nursing studies.\"<\/p>\n<p>Created in 1963, York's Faculty of Graduate Studies\u00a0is the second largest in
