{"id":15547,"date":"2010-09-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-09-29T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/2010\/09\/29\/new-video-shows-how-to-bee-friendly\/"},"modified":"2025-04-01T15:07:05","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T19:07:05","slug":"new-video-shows-how-to-bee-friendly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2010\/09\/29\/new-video-shows-how-to-bee-friendly\/","title":{"rendered":"New video shows how to 'bee' friendly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Without bees, we wouldn\u2019t have coffee to drink at breakfast, tomatoes in\u00a0our sandwich at lunch or fruit for a snack on the go.<\/p>\n<p>While bee populations all over the world are in trouble, there are lots of things individuals can do to create bee-friendly gardens\u00a0\u2013 even if your personal green space is limited to a condo balcony.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Here\u2019s Professor <a title=\"Laurence Packer research website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/bugsrus\/index\/index.html\">Laurence Packer<\/a> from York\u2019s Department of Biology in the <a title=\"Faculty of Science &amp; Engineering\" href=\"http:\/\/science.yorku.ca\/\">Faculty of Science &amp; Engineering<\/a> on what you can do to help the world\u2019s bees in your backyard:<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Packer travels the world tracking many of the 19,500 described species of wild bees. While his perspective is international, Packer\u2019s backyard is a great example of a bee-friendly space and is featured in the video. He is also the author of <a href=\"http:\/\/harpercollins.ca\/books\/Keeping-Bees-Laurence-Packer\/?isbn=9781554681099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Keeping the Bees: Why All Bees Are at Risk and What We Can Do to Save Them<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Harper Collins Canada, 2010).\u00a0All proceeds form his book will be directed toward bee conservation research.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, Packer was featured on CBC\u2019s \"The Nature of Things\", hosted by David Suzuki. The episode, \u201c<a title=\"Bee episode\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/documentaries\/natureofthings\/2010\/bees\/\">To Bee or Not to Bee<\/a>\u201d, highlights dramatic declines in North America\u2019s wild bee and honey bee populations, and explores what the disappearance and decline of these insects tells us about larger ecological problems. The episode is also available for download on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/video\/#\/Shows\/The_Nature_of_Things\/ID=1380312270\">CBC<\/a>\u00a0website.
