The York Centre for Asian Research (YCAR) is now accepting applications for student awards offered in the Winter 2022 term.
Applications for the following awards are due on Feb. 8, 2022:
One Albert C.W. Chan Foundation Fellowship worth $1,000 is available. Established by the Albert C.W. Chan Foundation, the fellowship encourages and assists graduate students to carry out field research in East and/or Southeast Asia. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons, be Ontario residents and demonstrate financial need.

The David Wurfel Award provides financial support in the amount of $1,500 to an honours undergraduate or graduate student who has demonstrated the need to conduct research related to a thesis or course paper or project on the topic of Filipino history, culture or society. Preference will be given to undergraduate or masters student applicants. The award is open to students enrolled at ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ in social sciences or humanities programs (including students enrolled in law, education, fine arts and environmental studies); who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons; have a grade point average of at least 6.0; and demonstrate financial need. Applicants must also have demonstrated promise of leadership with respect to the Filipino community in Canada.

The Dr. Sangdeok Woo and Mrs. Kwisoon Lim Woo Graduate Award has been created to support graduate students undertaking research on the topics of Korean history, culture or society. The recipient must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, and , and demonstrate financial need. The award is valued at $12,500. (Note: This award is comprised of matching funds. If you are expecting to receive the York Graduate Fellowship, your Fellowship amount will be adjusted by up to $5,000 upon receiving this award.)

This award is intended to encourage and promote research with a substantive focus on Tamil language, history, culture, society or the Tamil diaspora, but comparative research is also eligible. The award is tenable to provide financial support to full-time graduate students at ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ who have demonstrated the need to conduct fieldwork, research or Tamil language training to complete a thesis or dissertation on such a topic. The award is open to domestic and international students currently enrolled in graduate studies at ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ who have a grade point average of at least B+. Financial need will also be considered.

The Nirvan Bhavan Graduate Fellowship will be given annually to a ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ graduate student who is engaged in research on the arts, society and/or culture of India. This award is valued at $6,500. The award valued at $2,000 will be granted annually to a graduate student conducting research on southeast Asia, especially where such research will require the student to travel to southeast Asia. Preference will be given to doctoral students carrying out historical, cultural or artistic projects in the region. Canadian Citizens, permanent residents, protected persons and international students are all eligible.

Vivienne Poy Asian Research Awards are granted to graduate students enrolled at ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ and who are graduate associates of the York Centre for Asian Research. Priority will be given to students who apply to do research in fulfillment of the fieldwork requirement of the Graduate Diploma in Asian Studies (GDAS). The award is open to local and international students who have a grade point average of at least B+ and can demonstrate that fieldwork in Asia will contribute to the completion of their program and to an understanding of Asia or Asian diaspora. Financial need will also be considered.

The award valued at $5,000 will be granted annually to a graduate student conducting research on topic(s) related to the Hakka population, their cultures, histories and geographies anywhere in the world. Canadian citizens, permanent residents, protected persons and international students who have a demonstrated interest in this topic are all eligible. The award is open to full-time and part-time students.

YCAR Language Awards will be given to graduate students enrolled at ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ and registered for the Graduate Diploma in Asian Studies (GDAS), administered by the York Centre for Asian Research (YCAR). The awards reimburse costs directly related to language study. In most circumstances, this does not include travel expenses related to language acquisition. The award is open to local and international students who are enrolled in the GDAS at York, have a grade point average of at least B+, and with demonstrated need to learn a specific Asian language to appreciate and better understand the context and perspectives relating to their area of research.

The Young-Rahn Woo Memorial Graduate Award will be granted to graduate students conducting research in Korean language or culture studies or whose research may require them to travel to Korea. Preference will be given to students in visual arts. In the event that there are no such candidates available, consideration will be extended to graduate students studying a topic in the humanities or fine arts (especially visual arts) elsewhere in Asia.
