{"id":21741,"date":"2022-11-02T11:26:51","date_gmt":"2022-11-02T15:26:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/?p=21741"},"modified":"2022-11-02T11:26:54","modified_gmt":"2022-11-02T15:26:54","slug":"faculty-of-science-launches-community-2022-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/2022\/11\/02\/faculty-of-science-launches-community-2022-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty of Science launches Community 2022 initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This week, the Faculty of Science formally launched its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/community-2022\/\">Community 2022<\/a> initiative, which is aimed at helping faculty, staff and students reconnect in person and support the return to a more robust on-campus presence.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2022\/11\/MicrosoftTeams-image-4-818x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Karyn Davies and Gerald Audette\" class=\"wp-image-21744\" width=\"343\" height=\"431\"\/><figcaption>From left: Karyn Davies, executive assistant and manager, Dean\u2019s Office, with Gerald Audette, associate dean, faculty<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt the beginning of this term, we conducted a survey asking our community to outline what supports they most needed to reconnect with their Faculty of Science community members for a successful return to campus,\u201d says Faculty of Science Dean <strong>Rui Wang<\/strong>. \u201cMany expressed a sense of disconnection stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the community feedback, we collectively created this Faculty-wide, year-long initiative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Survey respondents overwhelmingly asked for more opportunities to connect in person within the Faculty, according to <strong>Melissa Hughes<\/strong>, senior advisor, Strategic Engagement &amp; Policy in the Faculty of Science. \u201cOur community also wanted more streamlined access to information on health and well-being and University policies related to COVID-19, seminars on research office policies and procedures and hybrid remote work, and improved technological supports for teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dean\u2019s Office kicked off this community reconnection initiative with a Faculty-wide barbecue for the start of the fall semester. For some faculty and staff hired during the pandemic, it was their first time meeting colleagues in person; for others, it was an emotional reunion with colleagues they hadn\u2019t seen since 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/community-2022\/\">Community 2022 website<\/a>, launched on Tuesday, Nov. 1, features events and supports for faculty, staff and students:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Events for social reconnection amongst faculty, staff and students,<\/strong> including Faculty-wide social gatherings open to faculty, staff, and graduate students, a monthly Dean\u2019s Luncheon, and forthcoming events for undergraduate and graduate students to connect with their peers.<\/li><li><strong>Initiatives to welcome community members who joined the Faculty during the pandemic,<\/strong> such as guided Faculty of Science tours and a Dean\u2019s Luncheon for new faculty.<\/li><li><strong>Supports for the return to more robust in-person teaching,<\/strong> with improved access to information on COVID-19 policies and procedures, teaching and learning supports, as well as improved channels to address technology support issues, including a forthcoming information technology roundtable.<\/li><li><strong>Faculty of Science-led seminars on research office policies and procedures<\/strong> and promotion of University-led seminars to help with the transition to hybrid remote work.<\/li><li><strong>Promotion of health and well-being<\/strong> through more streamlined access to information on University resources for faculty, staff and students, and forthcoming resources to help instructors support students\u2019 well-being within their courses.<\/li><li><strong>Upcoming improvements to the physical environment of the Faculty to encourage in-person connection,<\/strong> including a renewed student gathering space, improvements to the staff lunchroom and Dean\u2019s Office reception area, and other improvements as needed.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiatives will be rolled out through the 2022-23 academic year. The Community 2022 website will be updated as events and resources are added. Wang notes that the initiatives support and are in alignment with the Faculty\u2019s five-year strategic plan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/about\/strategic-plan\/\">Science for the Future<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to thank our community for their feedback that informed the creation of this initiative, and for all they bring to their work within the Faculty of Science every day,\u201d says Wang. \u201cCommunity 2022 builds on our Faculty\u2019s strong sense of belonging, togetherness and commitment to support one another. We are excited to continue building our Faculty of Science community together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
