Congratulations to Biology Professor Sandra Rehan on her appointment as York Research Chair (YRC) in Molecular Ecology and Behavioural Genetics. Rehan researches the evolution of bees and their role in biodiversity. As a YRC, she will employ advanced DNA technology to investigate bee behaviour and genetics.

Rehan was among ten newly announced YRCs, which is an internal program at żě˛ĄĘÓƵ that supports outstanding faculty members as they produce research and excel in their wide-ranging areas of study. The YRC program is designed to offer a similar level of support as the federal government’s Canada Research Chairs program, which funds the work of world-class researchers and their teams at institutions across the country.

“The York Research Chairs program enables the University to celebrate and champion our exceptional research community as they pursue discovery, invention and innovation at the highest level in their respective fields, from using artificial intelligence to track and capture space debris to leveraging extended reality technologies for theatre and performance, and so much more,” said President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton. “I extend a warm congratulations to the new Chairholders whose leading expertise, bolstered by this program, holds the potential to create significant impacts both in Canada and globally.”

Congratulations to Faculty of Science Professor Amro Zayed, who was one of two faculty members honoured by the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) with the Postdoctoral Supervisor Award during an FGS council meeting on Dec. 7. The award is presented annually to a faculty member in any department and program at York who demonstrates exemplary support for postdoctoral scholars.

Zayed, a professor in the Department of Biology and York Research Chair in Genomics, is currently the inaugural director of York’s Centre for Bee Ecology, Evolution & Conservation, leading a research program on the genetics, genomics and behaviour of social insects, using the honey bee as a model organism.

Zayed’s lab provides opportunities to conduct research and network with academics and industry partners worldwide. Since 2009, Zayed has supervised eight postdoctoral Fellows who have collectively produced a total of 28 peer-reviewed publications and 71 conference presentations. He aims to equip postdoctoral Fellows with the skills necessary to successfully navigate the increasingly competitive job market.

“His approach to leadership has inspired us to seek creative solutions in research and to collaborate with diverse groups of stakeholders,” stated Sydney Wizenberg and Sarah French in their letter of nomination. “To this end, Amro exemplifies all of the characteristics one would expect of an intellectual leader and role model. He provides a unilateral environment of support to his research group. He is personally invested in our success and well-being, going above and beyond to help with professional skill development. He is actively involved in our career development, prioritizing our long-term success over our short-term role in his group.”

Congratulations to Biology Professor Sapna Sharma on being named among the 15 newest York Research Chairs (YRC), an internal program that mirrors the national Canada Research Chairs program which recognizes world-leading researchers in a variety of fields.

“The York Research Chair program is an important complement to the Canada Research Chair program to advance our efforts to strengthen research and related creative activities across the University and enhance the well-being of the communities we serve,” says President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton. “My warm congratulations to the newest recipients on this achievement.”

Sharma was appointed as a Tier 2 YRC in Global Change Biology. Her research as YRC will seek to gain a deeper understanding of the ecological impacts of climate change on freshwater availability and quality. Sharma’s research will capitalize on long-term climatic and ecological time series collected from thousands of lakes and apply cutting-edge statistical and machine learning analyses to forecast the impacts of global environmental change on freshwater security and help to explain macroecological patterns, drivers and impacts of worldwide lake responses to climate change. The research program will collaborate with researchers across disciplines to develop technological, natural, health and social solutions to water security.

Congratulations to Chemistry Professor Ryan Hili for receiving the 2023 Melanie O'Neill Young Investigator Award in Biological Chemistry from the Canadian Society for Chemistry. The award is presented to a scientist residing in Canada who has made a distinguished contribution to biological chemistry while working in Canada.

Hili is the York Research Chair in Molecular Evolution. His research interests focus on using DNA to program and encode the synthesis of molecular libraries ranging from small molecules to synthetic biopolymers. By using the principles of Darwinian evolution, his lab can evolve these molecular libraries for desired function, yielding small molecule drugs to treat human disease or antibody mimetics for use in medical diagnostics.

He is a previous recipient of the Early Researcher Award from the Ontario Ministry of Research, Innovation and Science, the Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award, and the Thieme Chemistry Journal Award.

#10 Enhanced opportunities for undergraduate research and success

Fifty-five students from Science and across the University attended our annual Summer Undergraduate Research Conference to present their summer research projects and network with their peers. The Faculty of Science also established the Earle Nestmann Undergraduate Research Award program, thanks to a generous donation from alumnus Earle Nestmann.

#9 New international education experience programs and initiatives

We launched our 2+2/2+3 Undergraduate International Collaboration Education Programs, which allow students from participating institutions to complete their first two years of study at their home university and their last two or three years at York. We also created the York Science Hainan Learning Centre to support some of our international students currently studying online due to COVID-19.

#7 Three Science professors elected to Royal Society of Canada (RSC)

The elected three York Science faculty members: Professor Jianhong Wu, as Fellow, Academy of Science; and Professors Sandra Rehan and Sapna Sharma, as members of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. Recognition by the RSC is the highest honour an individual can achieve in the arts, social sciences and sciences.

#6 New professors join Faculty of Science ranks

We welcomed new faculty members Charlotte de Araujo, Kohitij Kar, Allysa Lumley, Daniela Monaldi, Gloria Orchard, Balint Radics, Kelly Ramsay, Sarah Rugheimer, and Jennifer van Wijngaarden. By recruiting talented new researchers and teachers like these individuals, we are building science for the future and making York Science a great place to learn and be a researcher.


#5 Launch of Data Science program

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics launched a new Data Science program, starting fall 2023. The program includes streams in areas of practice such as business and health, together with a capstone course where students work on real-world problems for clients.

#4 Focus on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) for new STS offerings

The Department of Science, Technology & Society (STS) revamped its roster of courses and major and minor options, including two new EDI-focused courses that offer students the opportunity to examine EDI through explorations of past and present issues and controversies in science and technology.

#3 New domes installed at Allan I. Carswell Observatory

Two new state-of-the-art, remote-controlled domes were installed at the Allan I. Carswell Astronomical Observatory, replacing the original domes from the 1960s and opening the night sky for better viewing of planets, stars, nebulae and more.


#2 $7.25M for Global South AI4PEP Network

Professor Jude Kong received $7.25 million from the International Development Research Centre to establish the Global South Artificial Intelligence for Pandemic and Epidemic Preparedness and Response (AI4PEP) Network. The five-year project is aimed at ensuring vulnerable and at-risk populations are included in disease outbreak management and policies.


#1 Launch of Community 2022 initiative

We launched our Community 2022 initiative, aimed at helping faculty, staff and students reconnect in person and support the return to a more robust on-campus presence. Community 2022 includes events for social reconnection, initiatives to welcome new community members, supports for in-person teaching, seminars to support researchers, promotion of health and well-being, and improvements to the Faculty’s physical environment.

Congratulations to Professors Jianhong Wu and Jane Heffernan, Department of Mathematics & Statistics, for joining the York Research Chairs (YRC) program – the University’s internal counterpart to the national Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program that recognizes outstanding researchers.

They are among the ninth cohort of researchers to be appointed since the establishment of the program in 2015. These YRCs’ terms run for five years.

“The York Research Chairs program is an important component of institutional supports for research, reflecting our commitment to addressing complex global issues and driving positive change in our local and global communities,” said President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton. “This year’s YRCs have made important contributions in their fields, and their future work promises to augment our understanding of societal challenges, including public health and rising threats to democracy. I want to congratulate all our YRCs and thank them for their continued dedication to research excellence.”

The YRC program seeks to build research recognition and capacity, with excellence in research, scholarship and associated creative activity serving as selection criteria. It consists of two tiers: Tier 1 is open to established research leaders at the rank of full professor; Tier 2 is aimed at emerging research leaders within 15 years of their first academic appointment.

Jianhong Wu

Jianhong Wu – Tier 1 York Research Chair in Industrial and Applied Mathematics

Wu is an expert in dynamical systems, disease modelling and vaccine evaluation. His YRC program aims, in part, to understand biological and physical systems wherein predation occurs. The research will contribute to the University’s growing capacities in disaster and emergency management and in AI research.

Jane Heffernan

Jane Heffernan – Tier 2 York Research Chair in Mathematics of Immunity and Infectious Disease

Heffernan has a body of work in the field of infectious disease modelling. In her YRC research program, Heffernan will develop models of immunity against infection – both in individuals and in populations – which can be used to quantify distributions of immunity and its protective effects. Ultimately, the results of the work will serve to inform public health decision-making for mitigation and vaccination policies to combat infectious diseases, with particular emphasis on COVID-19 and influenza.

YORK RESEARCH CHAIRS

The York Research Chairs program is envisioned as żě˛ĄĘÓƵ’s internal counterpart for the national Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program and recognizes outstanding researchers at York. The Faculty of Science is home to 11 YRCs. See the list of YRCs at żě˛ĄĘÓƵ.

NSERC/SANOFI INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH CHAIR

Professor Jianhong Wu.

In 2018, a $2.6-million NSERC/Sanofi Industrial Research Chair in Vaccine Mathematics, Modelling and Manufacturing was awarded to Distinguished Research Professor Jianhong Wu in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. Sanofi Pasteur invested $1.5 million over five years; the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) provided $1 million through its Industrial Research Chair program; and the remainder was contributed by żě˛ĄĘÓƵ through various supports.

The focus of the research program is to develop mathematical techniques to identify populations most susceptible to infectious diseases and enable manufacturers to produce cost-effective vaccines that can be deployed quickly.

ENDOWED CHAIRS

The Faculty of Science is home to three endowed research chairs.

Professor John McDermott.

MCLAUGHLIN RESEARCH CHAIR

The McLaughlin Research Chair, funded by a $1 million donation from the McLaughlin Foundation, supports world-class life sciences research within the Faculty of Science at żě˛ĄĘÓƵ.

The Chair is held by Biology Professor John McDermott. McDermott focuses on the mechanisms that cause a simple cell to become more specialized. This work is primarily undertaken using cardiac, skeletal and smooth muscle cells and neurons as model systems, and it is aimed at understanding the role of specialized proteins that bind to DNA to orchestrate gene expression. Professor McDermott is particularly interested in studying the basic regulatory mechanisms involved in muscle cellular differentiation.

GUY WARWICK ROGERS CHAIR IN CHEMISTRY

The Rogers Chair was created as an endowment fund with a donation from Mrs. Mary Rogers in 1988, in memory of her late husband, Guy Warwick Rogers, to support faculty research in the Department of Chemistry.

The Chair is held by Professor Cora Young. Young conducts research on environmental chemistry, using state-of-the-science analytical techniques to characterize chemicals, their sources, and their fates in the environment. Her primary area of interest is in atmospheric analytical chemistry, particularly in understanding how the atmosphere interacts with the terrestrial and oceanic environment, how contaminants are transported through the atmosphere, and the mechanisms and chemical drivers of partitioning.

ALLAN I. CARSWELL CHAIR FOR THE PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF ASTRONOMY

The Allan I. Carswell Chair for the Public Understanding of Astronomy is funded by a $3-million investment made in partnership with the Carswell Family Foundation. The Chair is dedicated to science engagement and outreach, and it benefits students and the public through education and activities.

The Chair is held by Professor Adam Muzzin, whose research interests are in the study of galaxy formation through observations of distant galaxies.  He is the Principal Investigator of the MINERVA survey, a large James Webb Space Telescope Treasury Program designed to find the most distant galaxies and search for the first stars to form in the universe.  He is also Project Scientist of GIRMOS, a state-of-the-art adaptive optics instrument being built in Canada and designed to map galaxy formation at cosmic noon with unprecedented spatial and spectral resolution.  Professor Muzzin is particularly proud of the junior scientists working with him and playing key roles in realizing these projects.
