Application due at agency 09-16-2026, by 11:59pm (ET)
Objective
  • To strengthen Canada’s cancer clinical research ecosystem by supporting high-quality, investigator-driven clinical trials that address unmet clinical needs and have the potential to improve care and outcomes for people affected by cancer.
  • To enable innovative, patient focused research that might otherwise remain unfunded and to ensure that practice-changing ideas have a clear route into clinical testing and impact.

To meet the diverse needs of investigator-initiated clinical research, the program includes the following two distinct streams. The streams are designed to support a continuum of clinical development, from early-stage feasibility studies to larger-scale trials with the potential to influence clinical practice.

Proof-of-Concept (PoC) Trials â€“ intended to support early-stage, exploratory clinical studies that establish feasibility, safety, and preliminary evidence of efficacy. These projects are typically hypothesis-generating and aim to de-risk innovative approaches prior to larger-scale evaluation.

Key characteristics:

  • Early-phase or exploratory clinical studies
  • Limited patient population
  • Focus on feasibility, safety, and/or preliminary signals of efficacy
  • May include novel interventions, combinations, or biomarker-driven approachesÌý

Full Clinical Trials (Phase I-II)– intended to support more advanced investigator-initiated studies that build on existing evidence and are positioned to influence clinical practice or standard of care.

Key characteristics:

  • Later-phase or more mature clinical studies
  • Strong scientific and clinical rationale supported by preliminary data
  • Designed to generate robust evidence on efficacy, safety, or comparative effectiveness
  • Potential to inform clinical guidelines or practice

Eligibility

Projects must involve direct testing of an intervention in human participants and may include early-stage exploratory studies as well as Phase I or Phase II clinical trials. All proposals must be operationally ready with a clear and feasible implementation plan at the time of the application submission.

Please refer to the  for information on eligible and ineligible project types.

Research Team

Projects must be supported by a qualified, multidisciplinary team and, where appropriate, should include:

  • Clinical investigators with domain expertise
  • Biostatistical and methodological experts
  • Operational and trial management personnel
  • Data management and regulatory personnel
  • Knowledge translation specialists
  • People with lived and living experience of cancer
Information Webinar

A webinar will be held on May 1, 2026, from 12:00-1:00 pm (ET) to present the program’s requirements and application procedures. Register .

Objective

In response to the revolutionary potential promised by the integration of autonomous systems into defence and security operations, the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces (DND/CAF) are seeking to advance methods to assess, calibrate, and maintain trust in real-time when humans work with autonomous systems.

IDEaS funding will help develop a research micro-net to stimulate collaboration and build networks of expertise in support of Canada’s current and future defence and security needs.

DND/CAF is seeking innovative solutions to independently assess and calibrate trust for autonomous systems to maintain technological sovereignty and enhance safety, resilience, and collaborative performance.

This challenge aims specifically to support Canada’s NORAD Modernization Plan ().

Eligibility

Proposals must include multidisciplinary teams of partners from at least three separate eligible organizations and/or institutions, one of which must be a Canadian university.

How to Apply

Applicants must notify their Faculty and the Office of Research Services (Maheen Hasan – mhasan@yorku.ca) as soon as possible about their intention to apply.  Doing so will both streamline the process of securing Faculty-level support for their proposal, and ensure that researchers receive adequate support in application preparation.

Objective

The scholarships will enable researchers from Ireland to spend 3–6 weeks at a Canadian university, and Canadian researchers to spend the same period at a university on the island of Ireland.

We welcome proposals from all academic disciplines. Some projects may focus directly on the dynamics of conflict and reconciliation; others may address the wider conditions that enable societies to live in peace. Together, these form two broad but connected themes:

  • Pathways to PeaceÌý– the processes of negotiation, mediation, reconciliation, and conflict resolution that build and secure peace.
  • Grounds for HopeÌý– the contexts and practices that help peace settle, grow, and become durable, including governance, law, economics, health, environment, culture, and identity.

Applicants are encouraged to be imaginative in connecting their discipline to these themes. For example, research might explore conflict mediation, the resilience of democratic institutions, environmental sustainability, health systems, cultural identity, or the perspectives of Indigenous peoples on land and community.

The programme recognises that Indigenous knowledge plays a central role in shaping peaceful and sustainable societies and seeks to create space for these voices within the exchange between Ireland and Canada.

Eligibility

Awards will be made toÌýEmerging ScholarsÌý(within seven years of their PhD, following common European research-funding practice) andÌýEstablished Scholars, with all recipients holding the title De Chastelain Scholar.ÌýÌýApplicants without a PhDÌýare eligible where they demonstrate an established academic or research practice of equivalent standing.ÌýUp to half of scholarships each year will be reserved for Emerging Scholars.

The aim of the program is to enhance universities’ research collaboration between Canada and South Africa on areas of mutual interest, with an additional goal of capacity development and inclusivity. The Seed Grants will support researchers affiliated with eligible South African and Canadian postsecondary institutions to build capacity, foster new and existing partnerships, and develop networks and/or consortia among the Canadian and South African research communities.

The NRF-SSHRC will support projects in following five prioritized themes:

  1. Just and Resilient SocietiesÌý(topics: reconciliation, diversity, gender equality, the rule of law, democratization, security, good governance, addressing poverty, ethical environmental practices, quality education, Indigenous knowledge systems)Ìý
  2. Environmental SustainabilityÌý(topics: sustainable and climate resilient agricultural systems, food security, pollution, clean energy, renewable energy, energy transitions, clean water, sustainable sourcing)
  3. Artificial IntelligenceÌý(topics: technological futures, smart transport systems, nanotechnology, urbanization – smart cities, informed policymaking, digital economy, digital innovation, digital infrastructure, big data and data science)

  5. Mathematics Education

Note: Canadian PIs must propose to undertake research and research related activities only in disciplines, thematic areas, approaches or subject areas that are .

Eligibility

The Principal Investigator for the Canadian and South African teams must be in possession of a PhD to be eligible. Each proposal must nominate one main applicant based in South Africa and one main applicant based in Canada. These will serve as the Principal Investigators (PIs) on the South African and Canadian sides. The PIs will bear the main responsibility for the project, including its technical and administrative coordination, as well as the timely delivery of scientific and financial reports. A researcher cannot serve as a PI on more than one proposal.

Researchers from subject matter experts, private companies/industries, and NGOs cannot serve as PIs but can form part of the joint projects and will be expected to meet their own costs of participation in the joint projects. Neither NRF nor SSHRC grants can be used to support these researchers.
