快播视频 prioritizes the safety and security of its community.  To ensure that all community members know what to expect and do in an emergency situation, the Department of Community Safety 快播视频 will be conducting its bi-annual test of 快播视频鈥檚 Emergency Notification System (ENS) on WednesdayJan. 24 at noon.

This test is taking place in accordance with York鈥檚 emergency management policy with the intent to promote the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors and help ensure the continuance of critical University operations during emergency scenarios.

It will include email, push notifications and alerts through the YorkU Safety App, digital messaging screens on campus, and the public announcement (PA) system. To clearly indicate that it is a test, the word 鈥渢est鈥 will precede the alert on all devices. In case of a real emergency, the test will be cancelled and the community will be notified.

Testing the emergency notification system may cause anxiety or stress for some members of our campus community. If you are experiencing difficulties or need support, please visit /well-being/finding-help/.

Safety App to ensure you receive timely and important community safety notices.

FAQ

Why is York testing the emergency notification system?

York tests its emergency notification system twice a year to ensure all community members know how they will be notified in the event of an emergency situation. This test will also confirm functionality of all components of the system as part of regular emergency preparedness activities.

How long will the test be?

The test is scheduled to last for approximately 10-15 minutes. It is important to note that while efforts will be made to ensure the test runs on schedule, there may be slight variations to the anticipated timing.

Will the test take place at all of York鈥檚 campuses?

Email and YorkU safety app notification will occur for community members across all campuses. Testing of the public address system and digital messaging screens will take place on Keele and Glendon campuses only.

Will the public address system be heard in classrooms?

The public address system test will be heard anywhere there are speakers installed, including hallways, common areas and large classrooms.

La version fran莽aise suit la version anglaise.

The events in Israel and Gaza, and in communities around the world this past week, have had a profound impact on us all. When classes resume following reading week, we encourage everyone to be mindful of the difficulties that students, faculty, instructors, and staff may be experiencing鈥 related to the ongoing tragic violence and loss of life.

Last Sunday, the University sent out a unequivocally denouncing the attacks by Hamas against civilians in Israel. As events have been unfolding, we have been reaching out to students and student groups supporting Jewish and Palestinian students, and to faculty and staff, to offer support and assistance directly. We also issued a community-wide message on

These world events have amplified deep divides. An inflammatory and abhorrent statement made by three student unions at 快播视频 has created considerable concerns and unease, and we have .  We are an incredibly diverse community of people who care passionately about advancing the well-being of the communities we serve. This requires that we create an environment where everyone feels safe in sharing different perspectives on how to advance that goal. Freedom of expression has limits and comes with responsibilities. We are better than reckless rhetoric and divisive words and deeds. And we must never tolerate the promotion or justification of hate or violence.

The University is asking faculty and instructors to exercise care and flexibility over the next week in relation to academic considerations, including requests for alternative access to course materials for students with safety concerns or in need of support. Students who have concerns about coming to campus should be accommodated wherever that is possible.

Faculty and instructors may require support to navigate challenging conversations or conflict in the classroom. I encourage you to look at the Teaching Commons resources that are being offered to support you. Supports are available for students with concerns including the respective Associate Dean Students of their Faculties; the ; and the Ombudsperson.

We also want you to know that the Community Safety 快播视频 team has proactively moved to strengthen safety and security measures at this time, including through:

  • Increased campus safety patrols in priority areas
  • Additional security for high profile events occurring on York鈥檚 campuses
  • Enhanced CCTV including increased reviews of high traffic areas and residences
  • Engaging in ongoing dialogue with Toronto Police Service to be prepared to quickly activate additional support if needed
  • goSAFE staff will continue to perform regular checks and are available at any time to accompany community members with safety concerns
  • Classroom locations for courses are behind Passport York
  • And an Incident Response Plan has been developed for use in the face of any unexpected events that could compromise safety on campus

If you have any specific safety questions or concerns to share, I ask that you contact the Community Safety 快播视频 department at safety@yorku.ca

I know many members of our community are experiencing fear and trauma that can affect mental health and well-being. For our students, please know that counsellors at York鈥檚 Student Counselling, Health and Wellbeing Centre are ready to support you. Please call (416) 736-2100 or email schw@yorku.ca and identify what you are seeking support for, so we can prioritize our reply, or you can come to the Centre during office hours and speak with one of our drop-in counsellors.

For employees who are eligible to work remotely, managers are reminded of the flexibility that exists within the Hybrid Work Policy to approve ad hoc remote work. Employees with well-being concerns, are encouraged to access available supports which can be found at YorkU.ca/Well-being/Resources/.

Collectively, we are responsible for creating an inclusive and respectful environment where community members feel safe and welcomed without fear of intimidation or harassment. Please remember that in such painful moments it is even more imperative that we function as a community of care.

Sincerely,

Rhonda Lenton, president and vice-chancellor

Nous avons 茅galement diffus茅 un message 脿 l鈥檈nsemble de la communaut茅

Ces 茅v茅nements d鈥檜ne ampleur mondiale n鈥檕nt eu pour effet que d鈥檃ccentuer de profondes divisions.

We are closely monitoring internet activity and social media and do not have knowledge of any specific safety threat at York. Nonetheless, some community members have expressed concern for their safety in an environment where overtly hateful statements and acts are being directed at Jews globally, and where we are seeing increased evidence of both antisemitism and islamophobia in public discourse.  In an effort to reassure community members and visitors that our campuses are respectful, inclusive and safe spaces, we want to update you on steps the University鈥檚 Community Safety 快播视频 team has proactively taken to strengthen safety and security measures at this time, including:

Increased campus safety patrols in priority areas

Additional security for high profile events occurring on York鈥檚 campuses and at Convocation ceremonies

Enhanced CCTV with assigned monitors as needed, including increased reviews of high traffic areas and residences

Ongoing dialogue with Toronto Police Service for support if needed

Residence life will have security watch officials nightly

鈥            goSAFE staff will continue to perform regular checks and are available at any time to accompany community members with safety concerns

We also have a Safety App that we encourage our community to use.

Classroom locations for courses are behind Passport York

An Incident Response Plan has been developed to preserve safety in the face of any unexpected events on campus
