To mark the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Asian Business and Management Program (ABMP) at 快播视频, a special panel explored the evolving landscape of Canada鈥揅hina relations following Prime Minister Mark Carney鈥檚 recent visit to Beijing. The discussion brought together leaders from higher education, business, academia and policy experts to reflect on both tangible outcomes and broader strategic shifts in Canadian engagement with China.

Welcoming remarks were delivered by distinguished guests, including Lisa Philipps (York鈥檚 Interim President and Vice-Chancellor); Shamali Gupta (Director of Greater China Division, Global Affairs Canada); and Luo Weidong (Consul General of the People鈥檚 Republic of China in Toronto). Lisa Philipps highlighted the unique role of universities as long-term bridge-builders. Academic institutions take a long-term perspective, fostering people-to-people understanding even during periods of diplomatic uncertainty.

Panelists observed the resumption of dialogue between the two countries, marking an important milestone in trade and investment cooperation. , Executive Director of the Canada-China Business Council (CCBC), noted that following Prime Minister Carney鈥檚 visit, Canada is taking a pragmatic, well-structured approach with China that advances national interests and balances opportunity with risk in a changing global environment. Julia G. Bentley, former Ambassador and York Centre for Asian Research Associate, illustrated this point, noting that 鈥渂eyond suggesting that canola and electric vehicles have replaced ping-pong diplomacy, Carney鈥檚 visit facilitated the reinvigoration of a suite of consultation mechanisms between Canada and China . . . these serve as the practical building blocks of engagement.鈥 Douglas Proctor, Assistant Vice-President, Global Engagement and Partnerships at 快播视频, invoked a guiding principle expressed by the Australian Foreign Minister: 鈥淲e need to cooperate where we can, disagree where we must, but engage in our national interest.鈥 Proctor noted that this principle encapsulates how Canada can frame a renewed approach to engagement with China.

Education and research remain key avenues for bilateral collaboration: education programs, alumni networks, research partnerships, and faculty exchanges were highlighted as durable channels for sustaining dialogue between nations. The discussion emphasized that programs like ABMP exemplify the value of sustained, creative engagement. Rui Wang, Professor and former Dean of the Faculty of Science at 快播视频 reflected that 鈥淎BMP shows that meaningful exchange - whether in education, business, or research - can thrive even in challenging times. It reminds us that constructive engagement is built incrementally, through dialogue, perseverance, and collaboration.鈥

The discussion at ABMP鈥檚 25th anniversary not only celebrated past achievements but also provided a roadmap for resilient and informed engagement with China鈥攁nchored in Canadian national interests, values, and a commitment to people-to-people connections.

On this occasion, ABMP also announced this year鈥檚 China Insight Fund opportunity, with applications due by May 11, 2026, reaffirming its commitment to supporting innovative research and dialogue on Canada鈥揅hina relations. The fund supports research on evolving economic, social, and institutional dynamics linking Canada and Chinese-speaking economies and political systems.

Experiences of slow violence in the Mekong region of Southeast Asia is explored in a new bilingual photo book led by York researchers.

鈥淭his photo book offers a rare, insider perspective on the profound changes brought by hydropower development in two mountain communities of Lao Cai province, Vietnam,鈥 said Nga Dao, the project鈥檚 principal investigator.

Through striking images and personal narratives, residents reveal how the loss of farmland, forced resettlement, and environmental restrictions have disrupted livelihoods, cultural traditions, and social ties鈥攊mpacts that ripple across generations.

Photovoice participants from the project鈥檚 two case study villages received training in several aspects of photography and composition from a professional photographer. The book, Hydropower and Intergenerational Impacts in Ban Den and Seo My Ty villages, Lao Cai province, is the result of two years of documenting their lives in rural Vietnam.

Created through a participatory process, the collection moves beyond surface-level modernization to uncover hidden costs: economic hardship, cultural erosion, and weakened community bonds. 鈥淢ore than a visual record, it is a testament to resilience, memory, and the power of storytelling from within,鈥 she said.

The Slow Violence and Water (in)justice: Feminist Political Ecologies of Intergenerational Struggles in the Mekong Region project, led by Nga Dao (Social Science) and Vanessa Lamb (Social Science) at 快播视频, includes faculty and student team members from Vietnam Thailand and Canada. The project explores the processes, benefits and uneven impacts and benefits of transformations in Southeast Asia's Mekong Region as a type of "slow violence" that emphasizes time and generation in analysis. It is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. For more information on the project can be accessed at this link.

YCAR and the Korean Office for Research and Education (KORE) warmly welcome Yoon Jin Jung as the new KORE Coordinator. Yoon Jung supports KORE thanks to funding as part of the initiative鈥檚 five-year grant from the Academy of Korean Studies.

Yoon Jin is a media artist, curator and cultural researcher. She conducts research and practice through diverse personal work, including installation, photography, video and drawing, alongside community-based work, merging artistic practice with scholarly inquiry to illuminate cross-cultural relationships.

Jung's core research interest focuses on examining the mutually experienced changes of individuals or diverse objective groups. This inquiry is actualized through various methods, including artistic and curatorial practice, critical writing, and cultural project management.

Jung dedicates expertise to managing Korea-Canada international exchange projects, supported by active collaborative participation in diverse cultural initiatives: the 2018 Seoul Museum of Art Mediacity Biennale, the 2019 Seoul Culture Oil Tank Global Network Program, a 2021 column contribution to Quarterly Baekjo (Nojak Literature House), and the 2023 exhibition Reimagining Places: Land, Store, Home at the Korean Cultural Centre in Ottawa. Jung also served as an Instructor and Supervisor for on-site education and production for the international partnership, Envisioning Global LGBT Human Rights, collaborating with institutions in Africa and the Caribbean.
