The AI Governance in Global Dynamics at the Crossroads of Geopolitics and Technopolitics workshop is scheduled for 12–13 September 2024 at 첥Ƶ, organized by Wenhong Chen (University of Texas Austin) and Muyang Li (첥Ƶ).

Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds transformative potential but also raises concerns about surveillance, data ethics, social inclusion, digital colonialism, and national security. Globally, there is unanimous agreement on the necessity of AI governance, yet there are significant differences in approaches to regulating AI. While the U.S., the E.U., and China are establishing regulatory frameworks, Oceania, South America, and Africa are also crafting their distinctive AI governance policies. Divergent AI regulatory strategies reflect differing perceptions and imaginaries of AI’s social impacts and distinct technopolitical and geopolitical considerations. These regulatory approaches, influenced by the shifting dynamics of geopolitics and technopolitics, will play a critical role in shaping the global trajectory of AI. Hence, exploring the development of this global regulatory network and the interplay between the core and emerging regions presents a rich and timely research area.

This workshop aims to foster a holistic and comparative understanding of AI governance, emphasizing the role of geopolitical and technopolitical dynamics in shaping regulatory

landscapes. We invite scholars from different backgrounds, including but not limited to sociology, communication and media studies, international relations, and area studies, to submit 500-word abstracts of their work and participate in a two-day workshop around these issues. Topics may include but are not limited to:

  • What are the perceived risks and opportunities of AI that drive regulations in various nation states and/or regions? What values do they aim to promote through the regulatory approach?
  • How do nation state governments balance the potential benefits and risks of AI in their regulation?
  • How do geopolitical considerations shape the policies and regulatory approach toward AI?
  • How are regulatory frameworks being diffused, adapted, or redefined across countries and regions?
  • What role do power dynamics between nation-states and major global tech corporations play in AI governance?
  • What unique roles can Canada and other Asian Pacific countries play in the future of AI, considering their current policy and AI ecosystem?

Timeline

  • 15 June 2024 500-word Abstract due
  • 15 July 2024 Notification of Accepted Abstracts
  • 12–13 Sept. 2024 Workshop at 첥Ƶ

After the workshop, selected participants will be further invited to submit their complete manuscripts to a journal special issue. A small stipend may be offered to cover part of the travel and accommodation expenses of selected participants.

This workshop is presented with support from the University of Texas at Austin and York Centre for Asian Research.

Please submit your 500 word abstract to Wenhong Chen and Muyang Li by 15 June 2024.

The call is also available at this link.

Congratulations to Amy Choi, the 2023 recipient of the Dr. Sangdeok Woo & Mrs. Kwisoon Lim Woo Memorial Graduate Award. A doctoral student in Sociology, Amy’s research interests include internalized racism, critical consciousness, public policy, anti-Asian racism, and the model minority stereotype.

For her MA thesis, Amy examined the lack of critical consciousness of anti-Asian racism among East Asian international students at the University of Toronto. For her PhD, she is interested in furthering her understanding of internalized racism among East Asian Canadians, especially among Korean-Canadians. Her goal is to generate recommendations and policies that combat Asian racism.

Amy Choi

The Award was created to support graduate students undertaking research on the topics of Korean history, culture or society. Nagaratnam Sivalingam was a pioneer and leader of the Tamil community in Canada, who dedicated his life to promoting both Tamil culture and issues of concern to the community. His family created this award to encourage and promote research with a substantive focus on Tamil language, history, culture, society or the Tamil diaspora, but comparative research is also eligible.

humaira-saleem
N. Sivalingam Award

Humairah's research focuses on examining the impact of the forced cremation policy, which the Sri Lankan government imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through her study, Humairah wants to shed light on how this policy affected burial practices, healthcare experiences, and social dynamics within three major religious communities in Colombo: Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims. Notably, the research addresses the historical neglect of the Muslim population in policy discussions within the context of the longstanding conflict between Sinhalese Buddhists and Tamil Hindus.

A first-generation Canadian, Humairah was born to Sri Lankan Muslim immigrants, and the unique experiences of her family have ignited a deep drive within her to understand marginalized Muslim and racialized minority populations with utmost sincerity and compassion.

“This personal commitment has been a guiding force throughout my life,” she says.

She completed her BA in Human Rights and Equity Studies and is currently in her first year of the MA program in Development Studies. Humairah wears multiple hats in her professional life. She serves as a Program Director with SMILE Canada, an NGO dedicated to empowering Canadian youth with disabilities, reflecting her dedication to fostering inclusivity and social equity within her community. She is also Lab Coordinator at the Global South Migration Lab, actively contributing to research and initiatives related to migration, particularly in the Global South.

She anticipates that her research will also uncover instances of Islamophobia within the broader context of the COVID-19 pandemic in Colombo and will emphasize the need for a more inclusive policymaking approach that considers the unique needs and beliefs of all religious groups in Sri Lanka.

Congratulation to Ching Pong Fong who is 2023 recipient of the Global Hong Kong Essay and Creative Project Award.

A doctoral student in the Graduate Program in Social Work, Ching Pong’s paper examines identity negotiation of Hong Kong immigrants who have participated in the social movements associated with the 2019 Hong Kong Protests

Ching Pong Fong

Nick Mulé, Ching Pong’s course director for SOWK 7000/Social Justice within a Social Work Context, nominated his paper. He notes that Ching Pong carefully contextualizes identity negotiation from socio-political-cultural perspectives, and makes a clear link between this topic and social justice for the course and the discipline of social work.

Through critical analysis, Ching Pong argues in the paper that the pursuit of social justice by these immigrants for Hong Kong and its citizens continues, which in turn shapes the former's identities here in Canada.

“The passion brought to this subject by this student is subjective, yet they effectively and successfully translate it into an important ongoing social justice issue not only for the democracy of Hong Kong but the concept of democracy internationally,” said Mulé.

Due to the political turmoil in his hometown, Ching Pong moved to Canada in 2022. As a new immigrant to Canada, he is interested in areas such as identities negotiation of migrants, transnational social movements, Hong Kong diaspora studies, etc.

Before moving to Canada, he had experiences working as a research assistant for the social work department in the Chinese University of Hong Kong for a project examining youth’s mental distress derived from the social movement in 2019.

He is a registered social worker both in Ontario and Hong Kong and has over 10 years of expertise working with mainly children and youths in non-profit organizations.

The York Centre for Asian Research (YCAR) invites York course directors or teaching assistants to nominate exceptional (undergraduate or graduate) student papers or creative projects for the is offered annually to celebrate exceptional (undergraduate or graduate) student papers or creative projects that focus on Hong Kong and its Diaspora. Submissions are accepted throughout the year and the next deadline for papers/projects is Friday, 26 April 2024.
