This year it presents 275 films from 36 countries and offers one of the largest prize packages for short film in the world. Along with public screenings, WSFF hosts a professional development symposium and the largest short film <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110531\/Escape Clause2.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"303\" height=\"450\" align=\"left\" \/>marketplace in North America.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Right:<\/strong> Director Scott Boyd (BFA \u201807) heard about a death-defying world record attempt by a dangerously cool-headed magician and decided to turn it into a short film of epic proportions. The result is the 2007 short film\u00a0<em>Escape Clause<\/em>, which will\u00a0be screened as part of the WSFF's tribute to the Department of Film<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>WSFF\u2019s 快播视频 Retrospective celebrates the department\u2019s 40th anniversary and the outstanding creative talent it has nurtured over the years. The festival programmers \u00a0delved into the archives of York student productions to select a collection of films made in the past decade. Interspersed in the 76-minute program are a number of one-minute segments from <em>The 40 Film<\/em>, a specially curated collection of snippets spanning the department\u2019s entire history. \u00a0(<em>The 40 Film<\/em> <a title=\"The 40 Film showcases 40 years of York filmmaking\" href=\"http:\/\/research.news.yorku.ca\/2010\/09\/27\/graduate-film-students-create-visual-showcase-of-40-years-of-york-filmmaking\/\">premiered last September<\/a> with an alumni preview downtown at the Camera Bar and a party on the Harry W. Arthurs Common at York\u2019s Keele campus.<em><\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very pleased to help 快播视频 celebrate this milestone,\u201d said WSFF director Eileen Arandiga. \u201cWhat\u2019s truly exciting about this program is the variety of shorts and the mature talent of these young filmmakers. There\u2019s no denying it \u2013 快播视频\u2019s Film Department shines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re delighted to cap our 40th anniversary celebrations with this retrospective at the Worldwide Short Film Fest,\u201d said Professor Anmon Buchbinder, chair of the department. \u201cThe featured productions are an excellence representation of the remarkable work our students are doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The retrospective comprises six shorts, all of which were nominees or winners at CineSiege, the department\u2019s annual juried film showcase, in the year they were produced.<\/p>\n<p>Current student Vu Van (Franco) Nguyen\u2019s short fiction film <em>Plants out of Sunlight<\/em> (2010) makes its world premiere at WSFF. The film portrays a Russian immigrant woman living in Toronto who tries to patch up her fractured relationship with her father, for the sake of her son. <em>Hogtown Blues<\/em> has been seen at more than 20 festivals, including Toronto, Montreal, Austin, Palm Springs, Brno and Bilbao, where it won the audience award.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"8\" width=\"200\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110531\/Hogtown Blues2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Above: <\/strong>Vladimir Radian in a scene from <em>Hogtown Blues<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Luo Li (BFA \u201805, MFA \u201809), winner of \u00a0Toronto\u2019s 2011 Images Festival Prize for his thesis feature <em>Rivers and My Father,<\/em> created the experimental short <em>Fly<\/em> in 2005 as an undergraduate student.\u00a0The film weaves together ink, paintbrush and experimental filmmaking techniques to form an astute exploration of flight and calligraphy.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110531\/fly copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"350\" height=\"251\" align=\"left\" \/>Left:<\/strong> A scene from the 2005 film <em>Fly<\/em><strong><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nDirector Scott Boyd (BFA \u201807) heard about a death-defying world record attempt by a dangerously cool-headed magician and decided to turn it into a short film of epic proportions.\u00a0Having screened at festivals across Canada and on television in the US, UK and Italy, his documentary <em>Escape Clause<\/em> (2007) receives its Toronto premiere at WSFF.<\/p>\n<p>Tess Girard (BFA \u201805) created her hauntingly beautiful documentary <em>Benediction<\/em> (2005) as a homage to her recently deceased grandmother. The film has earned many accolades, including a showing at the Toronto International Film Festival and a special citation at TIFF\u2019s Student Showcase as well as the prize for best overall production at the Canadian Student Film Festival in Montreal.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110531\/Benediction2.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" align=\"right\" \/>Right: <\/strong>A scene from the doucmentary <em>Benediction<\/em> (2005)<\/p>\n<p><em>The School<\/em> (2003), co-directed by Matthew Miller (BFA \u201803) and Ezra Krybus (BFA \u201903), is a darkly comedic fable that asks: \u201cIs it death which gives meaning to life, or is it life which gives meaning to death?\u201d\u00a0- Edgar Gibson\u2019s elementary school class finds out the hard way. <em>The School <\/em>was the jury\u2019s selection for outstanding achievement at CineSiege 2003 and went on to become a hit on the international festival circuit.
