The thought-provoking plays tackle the Rwandan genocide, the Canadian election and the untraceable ghost population of the city of Whitehorse.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0catalyst for dialogue and healing is York film Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/finearts\/faculty\/profs\/wagner.htm\">Colleen Wagner<\/a>\u2019s Governor General\u2019s <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110425\/Monument2.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"291\" height=\"350\" align=\"left\" \/>Award-winning play <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.harbourfrontcentre.com\/worldstage1011\/themonument.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Monument<\/a>.<\/em> This electrifying drama was the inaugural production of Rwanda\u2019s IS\u00d4KO Theatre in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide (see <em>YFile,<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/archive\/index.asp?Article=10713\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 27, 2008<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Left: <\/strong>Actress\u00a0<span>Jacqueline Umubyeyi, as Mejra in Colleen Wagner's The Monument. Photo by Nick Zajicek.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif\"> <\/span>Translated into the local Kinyarwanda dialect and directed by <a title=\"Jennifer Capraru website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theatreasylum.com\/jenc.html\">Jennifer Capraru<\/a>, a former student in York\u2019s Graduate Program in Theatre and the founding artistic director of IS\u00d4KO, the play premiered in Kigali and toured throughout Rwanda. Harbourfront Centre\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harbourfrontcentre.com\/worldstage1011\/themonument.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Stage<\/a> presents the North American premiere of IS\u00d4KO\u2019s production (with English surtitles) at York Quay Centre in Toronto April 27 to May 1.<\/p>\n<p>Intimately staged and accompanied by song and African drumming, <em>The Monument<\/em> tells the story of a young soldier who has been convicted of war crimes committed during a genocide. Just as he is about to be executed, a mysterious woman who is both his saviour and tormentor offers him freedom \u2212 at a price. Billed as a \u201cprofound excavation into the nature of forgiveness\u201d, this highly physical and imagistic production paints a contemporary portrait of a country whose resilient voice continues to be a beacon of hope and reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before <em>The Monument<\/em> opens at Harbourfront, a second play penned by Wagner \u2013 this one a very topical, made-in-the-moment riff on Canadian politics \u2013 hits another Toronto stage. <em>Wrecking Ball 12: Are You Dying to Vote? <\/em>swings into the electoral debate tonight\u00a0at Toronto\u2019s Theatre Centre \u2013 exactly one week before Canadians head to the polls.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewreckingball.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Wrecking Ball<\/em><\/a> <span>is a fast and furious compendium of short works of political theatre. Playwrights hand over scripts to the directors and performers for rehearsal a mere week before the show, which is performed for one night only \u2013 usually to a fully-packed house. Founded in Toronto in 2004, <em>The Wrecking Ball<\/em> went national in 2008 when it was adopted in cities coast to coast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Wagner is one of six writers contributing works \u201cboth strategically and from their hearts\u201d to the current Toronto edition. The details of her piece have not yet been announced, but if <em>The Wrecking Ball<\/em>\u2019s track record is any indication, it will be a part of a theatrical romp long remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Showtime is 8pm. The Theatre Centre is located at 1087 Queen St. West at Dovercourt. Tickets are pay-what-you-can at the door.<\/p>\n<p>Another catalyst for political dialogue is the\u00a0latest\u00a0work by York theatre professor and playwright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/finearts\/faculty\/profs\/rudakoff.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Judith Rudakoff<\/a>, which opened in Whitehorse on April 21. <em>The River<\/em> offers a vivid, poetic and unflinching glimpse into the intersecting lives of marginalized people in the community where it was created. Directed by Rudakoff\u2019s colleague, Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/finearts\/faculty\/profs\/greyeyes.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Greyeyes<\/a>, the production runs to<strong> <\/strong>May 1 at the Yukon Arts Centre Studio theatre.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"8\" width=\"200\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110425\/whitehorse_Ashley_Map2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"182\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Above: <\/strong>A map of Whitehorse drawn by Joseph Fish Tisiga, for the \"Ashley Cycle\" that inspired <em>The River<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>The River<\/em> was born out of Rudakoff\u2019s ongoing <a title=\"SSHRC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca\/home-accueil-eng.aspx\">Social Sciences &amp; Humanities Research Council of Canada<\/a>-supported project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/gardens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Common Plants: Cross Pollinations in Hybrid Reality<\/a>. In 2008, Rudakoff visited Whitehorse twice to lead her \"Ashley Plays\" workshop, in which participants collectively devise a cycle of short, site-specific performances that share a character named Ashley and\u00a0a common theme \u2013 in this case, the theme of \"home\".<\/p>\n<p>The material developed in those workshops was so compelling that the collaboration continued into subsequent years. Rudakoff worked with local artist Joseph Tisiga and David Skelton, artistic director of Whitehorse\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nakaitheatre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nakai Theatre<\/a>, a professional company dedicated to the development of live theatre relevant to northern audience\u00a0to write the play. Nakai is producing it in partnership with the Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition (YAPC).<\/p>\n<p>The three artists drew inspiration for <em>The River<\/em> from both the extreme natural beauty of the Yukon and the ugliness that beauty can mask. Episodic and non-linear, the narrative is told by members of the largely untraceable \"ghost population\" of Whitehorse: a derelict vagrant, a missing high-school girl, a Tilley hat-wearing tourist, a transient worker and even an alien abductee.\u00a0These disparate voices take the audience on an unbridled journey through a world of longing and belonging that is both real and imagined.<\/p>\n<p>The production aims to promote conversation and action in the community. YAPC is actively inviting and offering free tickets to individuals who might never otherwise attend a production at the Yukon Arts Centre, as well as arranging a special invitational matinee performance at the local Salvation Army shelter.
