But in recent years, there has been a trend towards discarding the standard sequel for<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100824\/DavidHollands.JPG\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"229\" height=\"250\" align=\"right\" \/>mula, allowing a new artistic team to reimagine a\u00a0film franchise. For better or for worse \u2013 the cinematic results of this trend are less predictable.<\/p>\n<p>An essay examining this phenomenon by recent film\u00a0grad David Hollands (BA Spec. Hons. '10)<strong> (right) <\/strong>has been selected for publication in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/filmmattersmagazine.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Film Matters<\/a><\/em>, a new peer-reviewed journal celebrating the work of undergraduate film scholars. The quarterly magazine is published by the Film Studies Department at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW).<\/p>\n<p>In his paper, \u201cToward a New Category of Remake: A First Analysis of the Reboot\u201d, Hollands posits that a new genre of film remakes is developing in popular cinema and coins a name for this emerging trend.<\/p>\n<p>Hollands notes that according to film theorist Thomas Leitch, the four existing remake forms are re-adaptation, update, homage and \"true\" remake. Hollands sees the need for a fifth category \u2013 the \"reboot\": films that seek to recommence cult movies by simultaneously appearing to re-adapt, update, pay homage to and\/or destroy the original text, while denying the existence or importance of the original\u2019s sequels.<\/p>\n<p>Reboot examples cited by Hollands include director Rob Zombie\u2019s versions of John Carpenter\u2019s <a title=\"Halloween franchise on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Halloween_%28franchise%29\"><em>Halloween<\/em><\/a> and the most recent <a title=\"Star Trek (2009) on IMDB\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0796366\/\"><em>Star Trek<\/em><\/a> flick.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100823\/Halloween2.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"350\" height=\"280\" align=\"left\" \/>Left: Halloween II<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo recognize the reboot as a specific category brings a new dimension to the overall study of the remake,\u201d Hollands says. \u201cIt also helps illuminate the complex processes of film promotion and film spectatorship.\"<\/p>\n<p><em>Film Matters<\/em> considers essays on film criticism, history or theory for publication. It invites submissions from students pursuing a bachelor\u2019s degree in any field at an institution of higher learning anywhere in the world. As per standard practice for scholarly journals, articles are selected by blind peer review, in this case by UNCW\u2019s film studies majors.<\/p>\n<p>The referees were impressed with Hollands\u2019 paper, which they noted covers \u201can innovative subject that has not been explored much\u201d and argues his point in a way that is \u201cclearly stated and well put together\u201d and \u201cvery convincing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100823\/Robzombiegfdl.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"171\" height=\"200\" align=\"right\" \/>Right: Director Rob Zombie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <em>Film Matters <\/em>editorial board told Hollands they believe his article \"will appeal not only to sci-fi fans, horror fans, even just film fans in general [but also] a younger, more contemporary crowd interested in the remaking of older films.\u201d Above all, they noted, it was Hollands\u2019 fresh thinking that landed him a spot in the publication: \u201cThe readers were very adamant about this article's creativity and originality and said that they had never before read anything on this particular view of film remakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hollands originally wrote the piece as one of his final assignments for the Film Remakes class taught by York Professor <a title=\"Trifonova research profile\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/gradcmct\/TemenugaTrifonova.htm\">Temenuga Trifonova<\/a>.
