We aim to publish quality bilingual research in the social sciences and humanities about Canada. Our vision involves efforts to decolonize knowledge and scholarship within the field of Canadian Studies, and we hope to publish pieces and articles that center the voices of misrepresented, underrepresented, and unrepresented groups. We recognize that we exist within a context where undergraduate journals are few and far between, and there are limited opportunities or avenues for undergraduate students to publish their work. Our mission involves fostering debate and intellectual exchange between emerging scholars and thinkers who are engaging critically with Canada. As well as to ensure that our writers and contributors feel supported during what might be for many of them their first publishing process.

The journal includes articles, research notes, book reviews, and other submissions that contribute to the study of Canada, both at home and abroad. The journal is interested in all types of research, whether cultural, political, economic, demographic, or scientific, without methodological, temporal, or geographic restrictions. The journal gives priority to studies that explicitly situate themselves in the field of Canadian Studies and are innovative in sources, method, or interpretation. Contemporary Kanata is open to individual submissions but has also published special issues focused on specific topics.

The journal is situated in the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies at 快播视频. One issue is published yearly, with the financial assistance of the Robarts Centre and 快播视频. The journal is published electronically, but it can be printed in small runs for specific purposes. It is open access.

General Editorial Policy

Contemporary Kanata is published generally once per year (with exceptions). Texts submitted for editorial and external reviewer approval must fall within the journal's mandate and meet the requirements of an academic research journal of national and international scope. Before submitting a manuscript, please ensure it meets the journal’s publishing standards as set out in the “Manuscript Presentation” and “Style Guide” sections below.

The journal accepts only exclusive and unpublished material. This means...

that it is an unpublished work that is not being evaluated by another journal;

that one waits to receive a response from the journal’s editorial committee before submitting a text currently submitted for consideration by Contemporary Kanata to another journal or publisher;

That, if and once accepted for publication, the copyright belongs exclusively to Contemporary Kanata, unless otherwise agreed and noted.

Bilingualism

Contemporary Kanata is a bilingual journal that publishes in English and French and caters to a largely bilingual audience. Both languages may be used. Quotations or citations from either language need not be translated unless a specific argument regarding the language or translation is being made.

Quotations in English or French must be retained in their original language in the text. If the author wishes to provide a translation for convenience, it should appear as a footnote.

Quotations should not be italicized, but placed within quotation marks.

On the recommendation of the Translation Bureau, translate the names of universities according to the rules found here.

Example:

Université de Moncton

University of Moncton

Université Laval

Laval University

Université de Montréal

University of Montréal

Université Laurentien

Laurentian University

Université d’Ottawa

University of Ottawa

Université Sainte-Anne

Saint Anne’s University

Author Guidelines

Submissions

Interested in submitting? Contemporary Kanata requires authors to register with the journal prior to submission. If already registered, authors can log in to their accounts and begin the five-step online submission process.

Contemporary Kanata accepts submissions through cycles. We accept abstract submissions between January and February.

Our abstract submission period is currently open.

Please note that Contemporary Kanata will not accept submissions that are under consideration in another publication, or that have been previously published.

Academic Integrity and Plagiarism

Contemporary Kanata is committed to publishing high-quality, original work. We consider plagiarism to be a serious offence, and we will not accept or publish any submissions that have been plagiarized. We abide by 快播视频’s Senate Policy on Academic Honesty.

For more information about plagiarism and how to avoid it, please read the American Psychological Association’s (APA) guidelines on plagiarism.

Research Ethics

At Contemporary Kanata, we understand that ethical research is based on consent and that it is undertaken with responsibility. Similarly, we understand that innovative research sometimes requires interviews or engagement involving humans, animals or biological agents. For this reason, we ask that authors that engage in research that involves their research subject submit us a statement about how their research will be achieved ethically. We would also like to remind authors that research that engages and that involves the research subject must be reviewed by a relevant ethics review committee prior to the start of any research.

Contemporary Kanata reserves the right to reject any research that involves the research subject if ethics approval has not been obtained.

For more information on research ethics, please refer to 快播视频’s Summary of the Guiding Ethical Principles for Research Ethics. For more information on how to obtain ethics approval, please refer to 快播视频’s Research and Innovation Office’s page on Research Ethics.

Images and Image Ethics

Image formatting for submissions should be at least 300dpi and submitted as .jpg or .png, unless specific guidelines below indicate otherwise.

Authors must indicate in their manuscripts captions that indicate the image source if they are the creator of the image; the permission or license from the copyright holder or creator to use the image; or are using an image from the public domain or licensed under a Creative Commons license. We ask authors to ensure that they have the appropriate license or permission to use the images and that their work respects the rights to privacy and to the intellectual property of others.

Please note that upon submission, all work will be held to the standard of 快播视频’s Senate Policy on Academic Policy, referenced above. Contemporary Kanata encourages authors to visit the CIPPIC Copyright and Privacy in Photography Guidelines prior to submitting.

General Guidelines

Formatting and Citation Style

As an interdisciplinary journal, Contemporary Kanata asks all authors to use the APA Citation and Formatting Style, 7th edition. All authors are responsible for the accuracy of their citations.

We request all authors interested in submitting to format their submissions in line with the following guidelines:

Font: Times New Roman, size 12

Margins: 1in.

Line spacing: 2pt (double spacing)

File Format: Microsoft Word

Page number to be included in the top right corner of every page.

We request that authors do not include their names or any other sort of identification within their submission.

Please note that these guidelines do not apply to cartoon submissions.

For more information on APA Citation Style please consult with the APA’s in-text citation guide and with the APA’s reference guide. All creative nonfiction submissions should be between 1,500-2,000 words, excluding title page, citations, and references.
