Rationale
Despite Canada鈥檚 self-branding as a safe and inclusive destination for higher education, racialized 2S/LGBTQIA+ university international students, henceforth queer/trans international students, face persistent and often invisible barriers to successful inclusion/integration. The goal of this project is to engage, with our main partner the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE), along with university and community stakeholders, in discussing and providing more inclusive services and improve the integration of racialized queer/trans international students to Canada.
We have three objectives: (1) to convene university student services practitioners and community stakeholders across Canada to understand the challenges and best practices in supporting racialized queer/trans international students, (2) to hold conversations across Canada among university services practitioners and community stakeholders on how to best support this demographic, and (3) to provide information and resources for practitioners and policymakers on how to best support this group.
We will host online public panels across Canada in Fall 2026 to discuss the most recent CBIE survey results pertaining to the experiences of this student group, and to gather the perspective of panelists on the challenges and best practices in supporting racialized queer/trans international students to Canadian higher education institutions. We will also collect, on a voluntary and anonymous basis, the reactions of audience members to these survey results.
