The Northern Studies Program at Carleton University is a 1 year intensive Master's program and 2018-19 will be the 2nd year of our program. The purpose of the Northern Studies programs is to provide opportunities for students to learn how to recognize and support wise public and private-sector decision making in the dynamic North.  The program is interdisciplinary and rooted in analysis of real-world problems. It presents research at the cutting edge from across the North.

The program emphasizes the biophysical, social, and policy environments of northern Canada. It recognizes the impacts of climate change on northern ecosystems and on the Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities that depend on renewable resources. It acknowledges the stresses of cultural transition and evolving governance as land claims and self-government agreements are completed and implemented. It appreciates the importance of functional bureaucracies and practices that reflect the aspirations of northerners. It apprehends the changes to the Arctic Ocean that will facilitate shipping and bring many visitors to the North.

The Northern Studies program is:

  • The first interdisciplinary program at the Master level to present a combined focus on the social, political, and physical environments of northern Canada;
  • It offers short, intensive access to a Master degree and Graduate Diploma in the National Capital Region;
  • The core seminars for the program are multi and interdisciplinary;
  • The program recognizes the importance of understanding the nature and capacity of research in order to support decision-making in the North;
  • The program aims to assist northern professionals, who need further academic experience to advance their career ambitions, through both intensive Master degrees and the Graduate Diplomas;
  • The degree program presents a full credit of experiential learning during a field course in the North and a work placement.
  • The program welcomes applications from all people interested in an interdisciplinary approach to Northern Studies. We especially welcome applications and inquiries from Indigenous and non-Indigenous northerners. The program aims to foster respect, appreciation, and interest in the great diversity of cultures and environments found in the North.

    To apply:

    Applications are due on February 1, 2018.  This program has limited enrollment due to its unique interactive and experiential approach.  Applications will continue to be accepted until all places in the program have been filled.

The Model Arctic Council is calling for participation.

An excellent and exciting opportunity awaits university students interested in the Arctic and Arctic affairs. University of Lapland and University of Oulu (Finland), in cooperation with the Model Arctic Council Thematic Network, will host a Model Arctic Council 2018 in October 29 – November 2, 2018 in Rovaniemi, Finland.

The MAC will engage graduate and advanced undergraduate students from universities in the Arctic states, and possibly from some Arctic Council observer countries, to simulate the work and processes of the Arctic Council and its working groups. In the simulation each student will represent her/his assigned Arctic Council role – representing either one of Member States, or Permanent Participants or Observer countries – together with 1-2 other students as a delega-tion.

For details regarding funding, time and location and aims of the Model Arctic Council, please download the .

In view of the ongoing labour disruption at York the Annual Robarts Graduate Conference has been cancelled.
We appreciate all your enthusiasm and support for the event.

Canada on the Edge?

What does it mean for Canada to be on the edge? Is it on the leading edge? Or is it falling off the edge? The conference will examine the idea of and dialogue surrounding Canada as a global leader (or not) and its role and participation in a radically changed globalized nation, where colonialism, migration, and transnationalism play an important role, both historically and presently. The Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies welcomes exploration of these topics from multiple and competing perspectives at its annual conference taking place on April 19th and 20th, 2018 at 첥Ƶ in Toronto. We solicit papers that engage with this theme from a myriad of approaches, disciplines, perspectives and lenses.

Graduate students at both the MA and PhD level are invited to submit proposals for presentations that examine the question of Canada on the Edge. The goal of this two-day conference is to provide an opportunity for graduate students to experience a professional style conference in a supportive environment. We thus encourage students from a wide variety of disciplines and from across institutions to interpret this question broadly. Potential topics may include, but are certainly not limited to, the legacies, experiences, or expressions of Canadians whose social locations vary on the basis of gender, sexuality, race, Indigeneity, ability, socioeconomic status, region, migration, status and difference. Papers on topics that explore the theme of Canada on the edge will also be considered (ex. as global leader in areas of climate change, foreign policy, international relations, development studies, literature, culture and communication studies and more!).

Reimbursement of some travel costs will be made available for students attending the entire conference from outside the Greater Toronto Area. Please submit proposals (max. 250 words) for papers or panels (as shown below) by February 26, 2018.
