Athanasios (Sakis) Gekas<\/strong><\/a>
Associate Professor of History,
Hellenic Heritage Foundation Chair of Modern Greek History<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Athanasios (Sakis) Gekas is an Associate Professor of History and the HHF Chair in Modern Greek History at 快播视频. He is the co-founder of the Greek Canadian History Project, the current president of the Hellenic Canadian Academic Association of Ontario, and a member of the Modern Greek Studies Association\u2019s Executive Board. He has written and published on economic and social history, British colonialism, migration and diaspora, modern Greek and Mediterranean history. His most recent monograph, Xenocracy: State, Class and Colonialism in the Ionian Islands, 1815-1864<\/a><\/em> (Berghan, 2016), offers a much-needed account of the Ionian State under British protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maria Paraschos<\/strong><\/a>

Maria Paraschos is the Archivist for the HHF Greek Canadian Archives at 快播视频. In this role, she is responsible for making the collection available for research through the archival materials' arrangement, description, and digitization. She has a Master of Archival Studies degree from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Arts in History and International Studies from 快播视频\u2019s bilingual Glendon College. Having grown up on the Danforth, working with the HHF Greek Canadian Archives at 快播视频 allows her to learn more about the place and community she calls home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexandros Balasis<\/strong><\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project: Greeks in Canada<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexandros Balasis is pursuing a PhD in History at 快播视频 and has been honoured with the HHF International Graduate Fellowship in Modern Greek History. He completed his undergraduate studies in History at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he also earned a master\u2019s degree exploring the Greek presence at international exhibitions at the turn of the 20th<\/sup> century. At the same time, he holds a second master\u2019s degree from 快播视频, focusing on Greek post-Second World War migration to Canada. He has worked as a researcher in Istorima<\/a>, Greece\u2019s largest oral history archive. His research interests center around transoceanic migration, focusing on migrants\u2019 agency and their interactions with migration policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angelo Nicholas Laskaris is a PhD candidate in History working under the supervision of Professor Athanasios Gekas at 快播视频. His current research investigates childhood memories and experiences of Greek Canadians during the 1940s in Greece. His work takes a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses the fields of oral history, migration, and diaspora studies. Vasilis (Bill) Molos<\/strong><\/a>
Chair, Liberal Studies University of Guelph-Humber<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vasilis (Bill) Molos holds the Chair of Liberal Studies at the University of Guelph-Humber<\/a>. He served as the Director and Research Lead of the HHF Greek Canadian Archives at 快播视频 from 2022 to 2025. In this role, he oversaw the archive\u2019s operations, promoted and facilitated research on its collections, and built strategic partnerships with donors and collaborators. Before this role, he taught history at New 快播视频 Abu Dhabi, New 快播视频, and Fordham University. His primary fields of interest include modern Greek history, identity, transnational and connected histories, and writing history from the margins. His forthcoming book manuscript is titled The Russian Mediterranean: Shaping Sovereignty and Selfhood on the Island of Paros<\/em>, and is under contract with Edinburgh University Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexandra Mourgou<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Projects: Greeks in Canada<\/a> | Musical Geographies<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexandra Mourgou is a Postdoctoral Researcher at 快播视频, working on the interconnexions between music and urban space, focusing on the music places which are related to the Greek Canadian experiences in Toronto. She is currently holding an MITACS Elevate postdoctoral fellowship, and previously, she was holding the Liberal Arts and Professional Studies Postdoctoral Fellowship. Her research interests and publications focus mainly on urban, cultural, and historical geography, and more specifically on the interconnections between space, place and music. She has a joint Ph.D. degree in cultural historical geography from Universit\u00e9 Paris 1 Panth\u00e9on- Sorbonne and the National Technical University of Athens. Her dissertation is about to be published as a monograph entitled: \u201cPlaces of Rebetiko: From the Eastern Mediterranean to inter-war Piraeus\u201d.  She also holds a master\u2019s in architecture from the National Technical University of Athens and a post-masters degree in Urban Studies from the Ecole Nationale Superieure d\u2019 Architecture de Paris La Villette and Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. In the past, she has participated in European and national research projects in France, Greece and Turkey. Beyond the walls of academia, she has studied classical and traditional music and has worked as a musician in Athens and Paris. Her involvement with musical performance has played a decisive role in her perspectives on academic, theoretical, and methodological exploration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Effrosyni Rantou<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Effrosyni Rantou is a PhD Candidate in Anthropology at 快播视频 in Toronto. Rantou has a B.A. from Panteion University, Athens, and a M.A. from The New School, New York. Her work in Social Anthropology focuses on aspects of migration and borders, humanitarian aid as a state of exception and alternative forms of citizenship. Currently, her doctoral research explores subterranean politics, vertical and horizontal material dynamics and the formation of political subjectivities. She is interested in particular, in tracking the cross-scale relations between the disconnected subterranean practices with the politics and notions of everyday life by looking at the ways mines operate as vibrant political borders and maps through which systems of power redistribute sociopolitical tensions at the local, national and international levels. Her research is supported by the Onassis Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Victoria Rigas-DiDomenico is a PhD History student at 快播视频 studying the history of photography and photographers in modern Greece. Her current research examines the diverse and often competing photographic representations of Greece at the turn of the twentieth century, exploring how images contributed to national memory. Central themes of her work include tourism, migration, nationalism, identity, and memory. Victoria holds a BA in Classics and History (combined honours) and an MA in History from McMaster University.
