IP Osgoode and the  (IPIC) are thrilled to announce the winners of the 2024 edition of .

In the Law Student category, won for his entry, “Shortcomings of the Trademarks Act in the Frontline against Counterfeit Goods”.

Pasha is a 3L student at Queen's University's Faculty of Law.

In the Graduate Student category, won for his entry, “AI & IP – Anticipating Obvious Issues for the Pharmaceutical Drug Industry”.

Nick recently graduated from Osgoode's Professional and is an Associate at .

The winners will be receiving a prize of $1000 and, in addition to having their winning article showcased here on the IPilogue, the article will be considered for publication in the Canadian Intellectual Property Review (CIPR) or the Intellectual Property Journal (IPJ).

Professors Giuseppina D’Agostino and David Vaver are seekingJD Research Assistants to assist in intellectual property law research in Summer 2022 with an early May start date.

Tasks

Students will be considered in two broad categories:

  • One student will be part of an interdisciplinary 첥Ƶ research team;
  • Additional positions are available for further intellectual property research

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must be currently enrolled as a JD candidate at Osgoode Hall Law School.

All applicants must possess strong grades, exemplary organizational skills, be proficient in legal research and writing, and have a strong interest in intellectual property law.

Term

May 2022 to August 2022, with a possibility of continuing on for the 2022/2023 academic year.

The successful candidates will receive compensation and should be available to work full-time.

Application Procedure

To apply, please submit:

  • Exemplary revising, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Strong writing, research, and critical thinking skills

If you are passionate about writing or editing, or you are interested in building your presence or being published in IP law, this is a great opportunity for you.

We are looking to hire Senior IPilogue Editors, IPilogue Writers, and a Content Manager.

Senior IPilogue Editors (2 positions available)

TORONTO, Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017 – For nearly 40 years, has been a guiding force in the Canadian intellectual property (IP) landscape. On Monday, Nov. 20, IP Osgoode and Osgoode Hall Law School at 첥Ƶ will host a special symposium in honour of Vaver –

Vaver’s scholarly outputs have been cited with approval in rulings by the Supreme Court of Canada and other court and tribunal opinions. His teaching, at universities on three continents, has influenced generations of students who have gone on to practise, research and teach IP law. On May 10, 2017, the Governor of General of Canada in recognition of “his leadership in intellectual property law as a scholar and mentor”.

The symposium will include a distinguished set of participants drawn from Vaver’s network of former students, colleagues and research collaborators. It will take place from 9am to 4:15pm in Room 1014, Osgoode Hall Law School, Ignat Kaneff Building, Keele campus.

The event will highlight four main themes of Vaver’s extensive scholarship: overlap and redundancy in the IP system, legislation and reform, users’ rights, and the importance of history. IP Osgoode founder and director , who will chair the day’s events, describes her former law professor and now colleague as

Following the symposium, the conversation will continue on IP Osgoode’s blog (), the IPilogue, which will feature blogs and commentary about each panel session. The event will be audio-recorded and a podcast of each panel session, the keynote speech and Vaver’s closing remarks will be made available for those who could not attend. A video of highlights from the day’s events and special messages from some of the participants will be posted on IP Osgoode’s website. In addition, a special edition of the Intellectual Property Journal will be convened with articles and commentaries contributed by the guest speakers and participants.

The , CC,QC (Supreme Court of Canada, 2006 to 2015) will provide a luncheon keynote and will be introduced by The , QC (Federal Court of Canada, 2001 to 2016).

The first session, “Too Much of the Same: Overlap & Redundancy on the IP System,” will feature Hughes, , Professor of Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law, University of Oxford, and , Professor, Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa. D’Agostino will chair the session.

“Towards a Coherent Moral Centre: Legislation & Reform,” will be chaired by IP Osgoode faculty member , Associate Dean, Research & Institutional Relations, and Associate Professor, Osgoode Hall Law School, and feature , Associate Professor, Faculty of Law, Queen’s University, and , Assistant Professor, Peter A. Allard School of Law, The University of British Columbia.

The newest IP Osgoode faculty member, , Assistant Professor, Osgoode Hall Law School, will chair the session on “User Rights,” an area where Vaver has made a formative contribution. The panel includes , Visiting Professor of Law, National Law School, Bangalore, and Honorary Research Chair Professor of IP Law, Nirma University, , QC, Founding Partner, Bereskin & Parr LLP, and , William Fairfield Warren, Distinguished Professor, School of Law, Boston University.

I am pleased to announce the start of the 2013-2014 school year. For those of you who are just discovering us for the first time, welcome! For those who are returning, welcome back! Last year was one of our most successful years yet, and 2013-2014 is shaping up to be even better. For all those interested in IP and Technology, now is a great time to get involved with IP Osgoode.

We had many achievements last year. From our highly regarded , to our , the IPilogue has remained one of the top IP Blogs in Canada. IP Osgoode’s IPilogue blog won second place in the for the best blog about education. Our IP Osgoode Speaker Series featured guests such as , , and publishing industry veteran . Our Moot Team for both best mooting team and best factum, and our IP Intensive program has with the addition of three brand new placements at Apotex, Cobalt Pharmaceuticals and CBC/Radio-Canada.

2013-2014 is set to become another successful year at IP Osgoode, and there are many ways for you to become involved. is currently looking for new editors for Fall 2013. These positions are open to all law students in Canada and abroad. For the more artistically gifted, we are also looking for new art editors to help with the masthead artwork and various other projects relating to IP Osgoode. The IPilogue is a great place to get involved in the discussion on about current pressing IP and Technology issues and many student posts have enabled greater employment opportunities for students and let to publication in leading journals. are due Monday September 16th.

We are also looking for Osgoode Hall Law School students to work in our . The clinic is staffed by student volunteers and helps provide legal resources to under-resourced start-up organizations or entrepreneurs requiring assistance in their innovation and commercialization activities. for clinical fellows are due Monday September 16th.

There are a number of events planned for the next school year. Our IP Intensive class is currently hosting . These seminars cover a wide variety of topics that range from “Collective Copyright Administration” to “Intellectual Property Reform Process”, from “Biotechnology Focus: Pharma” to “Privacy & IP”. The seminars will be led by government officials, industry executives, IP practitioners, academics and members of the judiciary. Anyone interested in attending one of these seminars should contact IP Osgoode.

IP Osgoode will also be hosting a full day symposium entitled on October 10th. The seminar will focus on the legal and commercial aspects of user generated content, and feature topics such as the UGC exception under Canadian copyright law, the interaction UGC with fair dealing, legal aspects of fan fiction and appropriation art, international treaty standards. All are welcome to attend and there is no registration fee. Please RSVP by October 3rd to (Event Code: UGC).

Finally, I am pleased to announce that our IP Osgoode Speaker Series will feature an appearance by Supreme Court Justice Marshall Rothstein on November 25th. Further details on his appearance will be announced on the IP Osgoode website later this year.
