York has demonstrated strong global standing in the following categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>SDG 1 \u2013 No Poverty (21<sup>st<\/sup> in the world)<\/li><li>SDG 10 \u2013 Reduced Inequalities (25<sup>th<\/sup> in the world)<\/li><li>SDG 11 \u2013 Sustainable Cities and Communities (12<sup>th<\/sup> in the world)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a leader in creating positive change, York has once again been recognized by THE 2023 World Impact Ranking for advancing the UN SDGs,\u201d said Rhonda Lenton, president and vice-chancellor. \u201cBeing among the top 40 universities globally is a testament to the high quality, interdisciplinary work taking place at York bridging community members across faculties and divisions united by a commitment to make the world a better place for all. I congratulate our entire community and the many outstanding partners with whom we collaborate on this tremendous accomplishment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"快播视频-THE Impact Rankings 2023\" width=\"1778\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UYyN-_i80E4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Impact Rankings were announced as York is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/2023\/05\/24\/york-university-federation-for-the-humanities-and-social-sciences-invite-community-to-reckon-and-re-imagine-at-canadas-largest-academic-conference-this-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">host to the 2023 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences<\/a>, Canada\u2019s largest annual gathering of academics. The conference theme, \u201cReckonings and Re-imaginings,\u201d serves to highlight many of the inequities and challenges the SDGs aim to address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rankings news also comes on the heels of the announcement of the largest research grant in the University\u2019s history which underpins a total of $318-million funding for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/connected-minds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Connected Minds<\/a>: Neural and Machine Systems for a Healthy, Just Society. The interdisciplinary Connected Minds team will focus on how society can evolve in a socially responsible way with artificial intelligence and disruptive technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m grateful that members of the York community have taken up our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/uap2020-25\/answering-the-call\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University Academic Plan\u2019s<\/a> challenge to deepen our contributions to the SDGs with such enthusiasm and dedication,\u201d said Provost and Vice President Academic Lisa Philipps. \u201cAddressing inequality and fostering sustainable communities locally and globally are massive challenges that require all of us to act. York also provides a broad array of financial supports to our students including the <a href=\"https:\/\/sfs.yorku.ca\/scholarships\/award-search?awardID=4850\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tentanda Via Award<\/a> provides financial support for up to 60 qualified undergraduate students who overcome barriers to earn their degree or who have helped others by contributing to the SDGs. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homelesshub.ca\/about-us\/about-the-coh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Observatory on Homelessness and the Homeless Hub<\/a>, York\u2019s numerous initiatives toward No Poverty are reflected by a strong standing in SDG 1. York\u2019s ranking in SDG 10 toward Reduced Inequalities encompasses a wide range of initiatives that demonstrate leadership both at home and around the world, including the recently launched\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dedi-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Decolonizing, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (DEDI) Strategy<\/a>, the first such plan to incorporate decolonization in a meaningful way.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2023\/05\/FvXqc0LXgAA1Rhx-1024x536.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17188\" width=\"512\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2023\/05\/FvXqc0LXgAA1Rhx-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2023\/05\/FvXqc0LXgAA1Rhx-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2023\/05\/FvXqc0LXgAA1Rhx.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>York\u2019s recognized strength in water research is helping to define the University\u2019s contributions to many SDGs, including SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. In March 2023, York was named academic lead in the UN\u2019s new global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/2023\/03\/22\/york-university-named-academic-lead-in-the-uns-new-global-water-academy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Water Academy<\/a>, which focuses on delivering innovative training and building human capacities on pressing water-related issues worldwide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/onewater\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OneWATER<\/a>, York's Organized Research Unit, is dedicated to research and discovery of strategic, integrated solutions to water challenges faced by communities in Canada and around the world. Led by an accomplished <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/onewater\/team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">executive team<\/a>, the researchers also have a key role in the delivery of the UN Water Academy. York researchers are also supporting humanitarian field workers in refugee camps with new tools that help ensure refugees can access clean water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While much of the University\u2019s ranking on SDG 11 can be attributed to advancing work with a global impact, the York community has made numerous contributions to sustainability in the local community. This year, as part of Earth Month and sponsored by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Youth Climate Report, 214 trees were planted across the Keele and Glendon campuses. York is also partnering with auto magnate Frank Stronach to transform the University\u2019s campuses into a living lab for the next generation of electric vehicles known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/2022\/06\/24\/york-university-becomes-a-living-lab-for-next-gen-electric-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SARIT<\/a> (Safe, Affordable, Reliable, Innovative Transit).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having recently appointed its first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/2023\/03\/14\/york-university-announces-inaugural-chief-sustainability-officer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chief Sustainability Officer<\/a>, the University is moving ahead with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/sustainability\/priorities\/action-commitment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ambitious sustainability plans<\/a> to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. York also recently celebrated its 11th consecutive year as one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/2023\/04\/18\/york-university-shines-as-one-of-canadas-greenest-employers-for-more-than-a-decade\/#:~:text=than%20a%20decade-,York%20University%20shines%20as%20one%20of%20Canada's,for%20more%20than%20a%20decade&amp;text=TORONTO%2C%20April%2018%2C%202023%20%E2%80%93,for%20the%2011th%20consecutive%20year.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canada\u2019s Greenest Employers<\/a> for 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognizing that each of us has a role to play in creating a better future for our planet, York recently launched the free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/sustainableliving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microlecture Series in Sustainable Living<\/a>, an innovative and interdisciplinary open access program that gives participants the opportunity to learn from six of York\u2019s world-renowned academic experts on a diverse range of topics related to sustainability. To earn a first-of-its-kind Digital Badge in Sustainable Living, participants must pledge to make positive sustainability-focused changes in their daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more about how
