鈥淓very one of us will either be impacted by mental illness, or someone we care about will be impacted,鈥 Lenton said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why I am thrilled to announce that 快播视频 will partner with the Waypoint Centre for Mental Health to help address these issues and improve overall health.鈥

鈥淎t a time when our healthcare system still remains under great strain and we are facing a shortage of family and primary care physicians, interprofessional collaboration in healthcare is critical to boosting health outcomes, well-being and quality of life.鈥澛

The agreement builds upon an impactful history of collaboration between 快播视频 and Waypoint that includes invaluable, real-world experiential education opportunities for students, and an academic research partnership with distinguished York alumni who are conducting impactful research at the Waypoint Research Institute. As well, 快播视频 Associate Professor of Health Informatics Christo El Morr is collaborating with Waypoint to create a first-of-its-kind early warning system to identify at-risk mental health inpatients to allow proactive modifications to their care.

Extreme weather events linked to climate change negatively impact water quality, quantity and sustainability for some of the world鈥檚 most vulnerable, but the United Nations (UN) and 快播视频 along with public and private sector global partners are working toward solutions through the UN鈥檚 Global Water Academy (Water Academy).

As academic lead for the Water Academy, York hosted a virtual panel discussion on July 14, 2023, titled, 鈥淗umanitarian responses to emerging water crises as a result of extreme climatic events.鈥 The virtual panel discussion was organized as part of the UN鈥檚 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, taking place from July 10 to 19 in New York.

Moderated by freshwater expert Sapna Sharma, York Research Chair in Global Change Biology in York鈥檚 Faculty of Science, the 90-minute panel began with welcoming remarks from Alex Mejia, director of the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Division for People and Social Inclusion; Ambassador Luis Gallegos, chair of UNITAR's board of trustees; and, Rhonda Lenton, York鈥檚 president and vice-chancellor.

The panel featured a conversation with global experts from the academic and non-profit sectors, including Jessica Vandenberghe, assistant dean, Community and Culture in the University of Victoria鈥檚 Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science; Swani Keelson, founder of the Global Water Promise; Nicolas Jarraud, member of the Global Water Partnership secretariat; and Syed Imran Ali, a Research Fellow in Global Health and Humanitarianism from York鈥檚 Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research.

Sharma welcomed the more than 150 virtual attendees and spoke about how climatic events directly impact water quantity and quality, 鈥淲ater crises and extreme climate events, including heatwaves, droughts and storms, are not only getting more frequent but also more intense, and the most vulnerable are paying the highest price,鈥 Sharma said.

To support water research as a priority and a critical part of York's work to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in 2022, the University launched One WATER, an organized research unit dedicated to finding strategic, integrated solutions to water challenges faced by communities in Canada and around the world.

鈥淓xtreme climate events and water crises are complex, global challenges that require diverse perspectives to identify sustainable solutions,鈥 said Lenton. "York鈥檚 academic leadership role with the UN Water Academy and through our organized research unit One Water is driving the positive and sustainable change needed to improve water equity in Canada and around the world.鈥

York is well-positioned to play a guiding role in the multi-sector collaboration that aspires to empower community-based networks, weave traditional knowledge, and inspire innovation to ensure equitable access to water for all.

Throughout the month of June, the 快播视频 community is celebrating convocation, a time-honoured tradition that celebrates every student鈥檚 academic accomplishments.

Spring Convocation 2023 began on June 9 with graduates crossing the stage at Glendon Campus鈥 Glendon Green and continues from June 16 to 23 with ceremonies at the Keele Campus Convocation Pavillion located in Sobeys Stadium.

In her first public act since being installed as York鈥檚 new Chancellor last month, Kathleen Taylor is conferring degrees on thousands of new graduates at this year鈥檚 13 convocation ceremonies.

Chancellor Kathleen Taylor; with Dr. Carl James, the Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community and Diaspora, and named a Distinguished Research Professor at York during this year's convocation ceremonies; and, President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton.

In remarks delivered at a Keele Campus convocation ceremony, Taylor reminded graduates that success is not an endpoint, but a continuous pursuit in a life-long journey.

鈥淪o embrace change, seize opportunities,鈥 Taylor said, 鈥渁nd continue to strive for excellence to better yourself and the world around you.鈥

Not only a celebration of life at York, convocation is also an opportunity for new graduates to share this significant milestone with family and friends.

While in many ways York鈥檚 spring convocation represents a return to the familiar, many aspects of the ceremonies have been reconsidered with the goal of creating a more inclusive and student-centered celebration.

The changes aim to advance the University鈥檚 new Decolonization, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy through the culture of convocation, and more strongly align this and future years鈥 ceremonies with York鈥檚 values.

In addition to changes in the order of proceedings that see the national anthem sung following a land acknowledgement and, where relevant, an Honour Song, the University鈥檚 mace has been repositioned as a symbol of university scholarship, leading the academic procession into the ceremony rather than positioned in front of the Chancellor as in previous years.

Student performers are replacing the bagpipers who traditionally play the procession into the ceremonies, and each ceremony features an alumni guest delivering a welcome message.

Communications have been updated to clarify that students, faculty and guests who identify as First Nation, Metis or Inuit are welcome to wear traditional ceremonial dress of their people and culture, and every ceremony includes either a volunteer or professional name reader.

After receiving their degree, graduates and their loved ones can celebrate with several fun and interactive features, including a Spotify playlist and graduation song, a social media wall and 鈥360 camera,鈥 and the opportunity to view and participate in student success story videos. Those sharing their celebration on social media are encouraged to use the hashtag #YorkUConvo and can add special convocation stickers to customize Instagram stories.

There are also two new grad celebrations that have been added: which takes place on June 28 and the will be held on June 29.

Nobel Peace Prize recipient Dr. Denis Mukwege was honoured at a reception at Glendon Campus on June 15 and received an honorary doctorate at the Faculty of Education convocation ceremony on June 16.

As in previous years鈥 ceremonies, York will confer honorary degrees to prominent individuals in recognition of their contributions to community building, social justice advocacy and philanthropy. These changemakers will also offer words of encouragement and congratulations to graduates.

This year鈥檚 honorary degree recipients include Chief Justice of Ontario Michael Tulloch; author, journalist and activist Cory Doctorow; Iron Chef judge and one of the 鈥淭en Chefs of the Millennium鈥 Susur Lee; Nobel Prize in Economics-winner Daniel Kahneman; community volunteer and retired public servant Joan Andrew; Nobel Peace Prize-winner Dr. Denis Mukwege; author and activist Ruth Lor Malloy; social enterprise leader Shaun Loney; filmmaker Nancy Archibald; and, engineering innovator and educator Thomas Lee.

In her remarks delivered at a Keele Campus convocation ceremony, university President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton encouraged this year鈥檚 graduates to use the knowledge and experience they have gained at York to create positive change in their communities and around the world.

鈥淵ou are perfectly positioned to help reimagine our world into a place that is more equitable, inclusive and sustainable 鈥 values that are core to York鈥檚 vision.鈥

Lenton concluded by urging graduates to think about what matters to them, whether the fight against climate change, social justice, or something else.

鈥淵ou have the tools,鈥 Lenton said, 鈥渁nd the world really needs your fresh ideas.鈥

Community commitment to sustainability underpins top 40 global ranking

快播视频 continues to strengthen its position as a leader in creating a more sustainable and inclusive world, ranking among the world鈥檚 top 40 universities for advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as revealed today in the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings.

This year鈥檚 Impact Rankings include tougher competition with more submissions, bringing the total number of ranked universities to more than 1,500. York has demonstrated strong global standing in the following categories:

  • SDG 1 鈥 No Poverty (21st in the world)
  • SDG 10 鈥 Reduced Inequalities (25th in the world)
  • SDG 11 鈥 Sustainable Cities and Communities (12th in the world)

鈥淎s a leader in creating positive change, York has once again been recognized by THE 2023 World Impact Ranking for advancing the UN SDGs,鈥 said Rhonda Lenton, president and vice-chancellor. 鈥淏eing among the top 40 universities globally is a testament to the high quality, interdisciplinary work taking place at York bridging community members across faculties and divisions united by a commitment to make the world a better place for all. I congratulate our entire community and the many outstanding partners with whom we collaborate on this tremendous accomplishment.鈥

The Impact Rankings were announced as York is host to the 2023 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, Canada鈥檚 largest annual gathering of academics. The conference theme, 鈥淩eckonings and Re-imaginings,鈥 serves to highlight many of the inequities and challenges the SDGs aim to address.

The rankings news also comes on the heels of the announcement of the largest research grant in the University鈥檚 history which underpins a total of $318-million funding for Connected Minds: Neural and Machine Systems for a Healthy, Just Society. The interdisciplinary Connected Minds team will focus on how society can evolve in a socially responsible way with artificial intelligence and disruptive technologies.

鈥淚鈥檓 grateful that members of the York community have taken up our University Academic Plan鈥檚 challenge to deepen our contributions to the SDGs with such enthusiasm and dedication,鈥 said Provost and Vice President Academic Lisa Philipps. 鈥淎ddressing inequality and fostering sustainable communities locally and globally are massive challenges that require all of us to act. It鈥檚 exciting to see York recognized as a leader.鈥

Since its founding, York has been a university committed to improving access to post-secondary education, and today, more than 11,000 York students are first in their family to attend university. York also provides a broad array of financial supports to our students including the provides financial support for up to 60 qualified undergraduate students who overcome barriers to earn their degree or who have helped others by contributing to the SDGs. 聽聽聽

Home to the , York鈥檚 numerous initiatives toward No Poverty are reflected by a strong standing in SDG 1. York鈥檚 ranking in SDG 10 toward Reduced Inequalities encompasses a wide range of initiatives that demonstrate leadership both at home and around the world, including the recently launched聽Decolonizing, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (DEDI) Strategy, the first such plan to incorporate decolonization in a meaningful way.聽

York鈥檚 recognized strength in water research is helping to define the University鈥檚 contributions to many SDGs, including SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. In March 2023, York was named academic lead in the UN鈥檚 new global Water Academy, which focuses on delivering innovative training and building human capacities on pressing water-related issues worldwide.

OneWATER, York's Organized Research Unit, is dedicated to research and discovery of strategic, integrated solutions to water challenges faced by communities in Canada and around the world. Led by an accomplished executive team, the researchers also have a key role in the delivery of the UN Water Academy. York researchers are also supporting humanitarian field workers in refugee camps with new tools that help ensure refugees can access clean water.

While much of the University鈥檚 ranking on SDG 11 can be attributed to advancing work with a global impact, the York community has made numerous contributions to sustainability in the local community. This year, as part of Earth Month and sponsored by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Youth Climate Report, 214 trees were planted across the Keele and Glendon campuses. York is also partnering with auto magnate Frank Stronach to transform the University鈥檚 campuses into a living lab for the next generation of electric vehicles known as the (Safe, Affordable, Reliable, Innovative Transit).聽

Having recently appointed its first Chief Sustainability Officer, the University is moving ahead with ambitious sustainability plans to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. York also recently celebrated its 11th consecutive year as one of Canada鈥檚 Greenest Employers for 2023.

Recognizing that each of us has a role to play in creating a better future for our planet, York recently launched the free Microlecture Series in Sustainable Living, an innovative and interdisciplinary open access program that gives participants the opportunity to learn from six of York鈥檚 world-renowned academic experts on a diverse range of topics related to sustainability. To earn a first-of-its-kind Digital Badge in Sustainable Living, participants must pledge to make positive sustainability-focused changes in their daily lives.

The new free microlecture series aims for a more sustainable future

With microplastics in our food, increasing risk of human-made disasters, and ongoing disruptions to ways of life in northern and Indigenous communities, the effects of climate change and environmental devastation are rapidly becoming more evident, widespread and intense. It鈥檚 more important than ever for communities and individuals to take action.

快播视频 has created a powerful resource in the quest for a better future 鈥 offering a chance to not just learn about sustainability, but to make a difference on an individual level and inspire others to take tangible actions towards a more sustainable world.

Former Toronto City Councillor, York alum, and long-time champion of sustainability, Mike Layton, recently joined 快播视频 as its first Chief Sustainability Officer.

The new Microlecture Series in Sustainable Living is a free, open access program that gives participants the opportunity to learn from six of York鈥檚 world-renowned academic experts on a diverse range of topics related to sustainability.

Thanks to its innovative 鈥渕icrolecture鈥 format, in less than an hour participants can learn how microplastics journey through and impact our ecosystems, unravel the relationship between energy and economic growth, explore why the most vulnerable amongst us often face the highest flooding risks, discover the difference between a hazard and a disaster in the context of emergency management, consider how colonialism has impacted the way disasters affect Indigenous communities, and dive into the reasons our lakes are rapidly warming.

鈥淓ach of us has a role to play in creating a better future for our planet, and transitioning to a cleaner, just and more prosperous planet needs to be both an immediate priority and a sustained effort,鈥 says 快播视频's President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton. 鈥淭he Microlecture Series in Sustainable Living helps to foster a culture of collaboration and gives us the tools and knowledge to make a difference.鈥

快播视频 President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton and biology professor Sapna Sharma join Devo and Dawn live on Breakfast Television to discuss the climate crisis and York鈥檚 new Microlecture Series.

Participants are tasked with making positive, sustainability-focused changes in their daily lives based on tips from each professor. For those who complete the series, correctly answer test questions and commit to putting their learnings into practice, a first-of-its-kind Digital Badge in Sustainable Living 鈥 which can be added to social media such as LinkedIn 鈥 will recognize their commitment to environmental responsibility and serve as a powerful tool for challenging others to do their part.

After earning their badge, participants become Sustainable Living Ambassadors, prepared to inspire others in their own communities to make small changes that can have a big impact.

Global challenges like climate change represent critical inflection points in society, and the collective response will determine the future wellbeing of people and the planet. 快播视频 recognizes the important role academic institutions play in convening people and ideas for meaningful action.

By making the Microlecture Series freely available not only to its own students and community but to all who want to join the movement for a more sustainable world, 快播视频 is showing its commitment to driving positive change and empowering individuals to take urgent action.

鈥淏y working together and taking small steps, we can achieve great things and build a world that is more sustainable for generations to come.鈥

Rhonda Lenton, President and Vice-Chancellor, 快播视频

The desire to build a more sustainable future and mitigate the threats facing people and the Earth underscores York鈥檚 core values and goals, and the Microlecture Series in Sustainable Living is just one of many ways 快播视频 is bringing its Sustainability Action Commitment to life.

York鈥檚 top 35 ranking among universities worldwide on the Times Higher Education鈥檚 Impact Ranking recognizes the university鈥檚 steadfast commitment to right the future. Along with the recent announcement of ambitious new goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2049 or sooner, York is expanding its sustainability office and leveraging education, research and partnerships at the local and global level to explore transformative solutions to the broad range of issues impacting the sustainability of our world.

Through the university鈥檚 efforts to educate and inspire the next generation of change-makers, York continues to establish itself as a sustainability leader in the Canadian post-secondary education sector.

York鈥檚 vision is to offer a broad demographic of students access to a high-quality university, that is research intensive and that is committed to driving positive change. At the centre of the University Academic Plan, is a challenge to elevate York鈥檚 contributions to the United Nation鈥檚 Sustainable Development Goals. The University is ranked 33rd in the world in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for contributions to advancing the SDGs.

Known for its innovative and interdisciplinary approach, York originally launched the first of the microlectures titled 鈥淭he Macro Problem with Microplastics鈥 last year as part of a physical installation on York鈥檚 Keele and Glendon Campuses. This Microlecture Series is one of the tangible outcomes of the University鈥檚 Sustainability Action Commitment, recently announced by Lenton. It includes ambitious new goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2049, or sooner, pledging $1 million to support sustainable innovation and expand York鈥檚 sustainability office, as well as the hiring of a Chief Sustainability Officer.

鈥淲e have an opportunity to redefine how we interact with the planet, to explore transformative solutions to mitigate the threats facing people and the Earth, and to support a more equitable and sustainable world,鈥 Lenton concludes.  鈥淚 look forward to seeing our Sustainable Living Ambassadors inspiring others in their own communities to make small changes that can inspire positive change and have a big impact.鈥

The 快播视频 community is celebrating an important phase in the construction of its new Markham Campus, as the final structural I-beam was placed 鈥 completing the building鈥檚 frame.

The recent ceremony was marked by the announcement of a $5-million donation from Metropia, presented by Metropia founder and CEO Howard Sokolowski, a York alumnus. In honour of this generous gift, which will go toward the capital construction costs of the campus, 快播视频 President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton announced that the student life centre will be named the Metropia Student Success Centre.

鈥淚 was a student at 快播视频 50 years ago, when it was an emerging institution in North York,鈥 shares Sokolowski. 鈥淪ince then, York has grown into an internationally recognized university, and I am so proud to be a part of York鈥檚 further expansion with a campus in the heart of Markham.鈥

Metropia Founder and CEO Howard Sokolowski participates in the ceremonial I-beam signing while wearing a varsity jacket presented by 快播视频 President and Vice-Chancellor, Rhonda Lenton, as a thank-you gift.

Located on the first and second floors of the new building, the Metropia Student Success Centre will be a dynamic and central hub for all student supports and services at Markham Campus. The suite will include the student success and academic advising office, an interfaith centre, multipurpose wellness studio and spaces for academic success, mentoring, counselling and student life. It will also feature areas for student organizations, including student government and clubs, to collaborate and plan events on campus and within the community.

鈥淗oward is a proud alumnus, and long-time friend and supporter of 快播视频, who has been involved in various capacities throughout the years," Lenton says. "I want to thank Howard for his continued friendship and support of the University, his family and Metropia for this generous donation to support our Markham Campus.鈥

In addition to honouring Metropia鈥檚 gift, President Lenton thanked partners, including the Government of Ontario, the City of Markham, York Region, the R.P. Bratty Family Foundation, as well as valued donors and business partners who are helping to transform this vision into reality.

Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti echoed Lenton鈥檚 thanks, and praised Sokolowski for his passion, drive and commitment to York and Markham. 鈥淭here is a responsibility Howard recognizes,鈥 Scarpitti says, 鈥渢o make sure that good things happen in our community.鈥

Sokolowski sees Markham鈥檚 thriving city centre and growing neighbourhood as a perfect match for York鈥檚 entrepreneurial spirit and curriculum. 鈥淚 care deeply about this community and institution and am so excited to see this project progressing towards opening day,鈥 he concludes.

Gordon Binsted, York鈥檚 Deputy Provost for Markham Campus, underscores the new campus鈥檚 wide-reaching potential. 鈥淭his gift goes beyond financial support for capital construction of the campus," Binstead says. "It represents the commitment and confidence of our alumni and friends in its success. Markham students will know that their campus was built with community buy in and vested interest in the future.鈥

The high-tech, research-intensive campus will embed York in the heart of one of the most diverse and dynamic urban communities in the province and country, while supporting research and academic programs that reflect the local economy 鈥 offering opportunities for students, faculty and staff to collaborate directly with employers, startups and community partners with a shared commitment to right the future.

Scarpitti shares his optimism for the positive change Markham Campus students will be inspired to create. 鈥淲e know that our world needs to change, progress, evolve and get better,鈥 he remarks. He adds that as far as he鈥檚 concerned, the real celebration will be when the first cohort of Markham Campus students crosses the convocation stage, before going out in the world and making a difference 鈥 righting the future.

Claire Del Zotto, third-year biology student who resides in York Region while studying at York鈥檚 Keele Campus, reflects on how the University鈥檚 science programs available at the new campus will enhance the student experience. 鈥淚 personally found the greatest value in the endless research experiences available to students,鈥 Del Zotto explains. 鈥淥nce the Markham Campus is open in 2024, experiential learning opportunities will be increasingly accessible to students in the sciences and beyond.鈥
