$4.2 million investment will accelerate nursing programs and create new education seats

June 05, 2025, TORONTO 鈥 The Ontario government is investing over $4.2 million to expand nursing education across the province. These investments will improve access to care by ensuring more nurses are trained and ready to work in communities across Ontario.

鈥淏y investing in education and accelerating training for nurses, our government is protecting Ontario and building on our progress to grow our nursing workforce for years to come,鈥 said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. 鈥淭hese investments will help ensure families can connect to the care they need no matter where they live, while also supporting the next generation of health-care professionals.鈥

The government is investing $2 million to support the launch of an accelerated registered nursing (RN) degree program at four post-secondary institutions to allow students to complete their undergraduate program within three to three-and-a-half years, instead of four years, enabling nurses to enter the workforce sooner. Conestoga College (Kitchener), St. Lawrence College (Kingston), Western University (London) and 快播视频 (Toronto) will receive up to $500,000 to support the development and implementation of the accelerated nursing program, beginning in the 2025鈥26 and 2026鈥27 academic years.

In addition, Ontario is investing $750,000 to support the inclusion of RN prescribing education into the undergraduate nursing curriculum at Georgian College (Barrie), Humber Polytechnic (Toronto) and the University of Windsor, enabling nurses to play a greater role in patient care by prescribing medication. This will make Ontario the first jurisdiction in Canada to include RN prescribing in undergraduate programs.

鈥淥ntario鈥檚 world-class colleges and universities are training the health-care workforce of today, and tomorrow,鈥 said Nolan Quinn, Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security. 鈥淭his critical investment will equip our province鈥檚 nursing students with the skills and education they need to get into the health-care workforce at a quicker rate and deliver excellent care in communities across the province.鈥

Finally, to support access to health care in northern and rural Ontario, the province is investing nearly $1.5 million to expand the capacity for nursing programs at Confederation College in Thunder Bay and Cambrian College in Sudbury. This funding will help increase enrolment and create new clinical placement opportunities by adding 50 new registered practical nursing seats at Confederation College and 17 at Cambrian College.

"Our government is growing the long-term care workforce so residents across the province can get the high-quality care they need, in the right place. By investing in the workforce of tomorrow, we鈥檙e helping more people begin their nursing careers at publicly assisted colleges and universities."

- Paul Calandra, Acting Minister of Long-Term Care

Through , the Ontario government continues to take bold and decisive action to grow the province鈥檚 highly skilled health-care workforce and ensure people and their families have access to high-quality care closer to home for generations to come.

Quick Facts

  • The government is investing $56.8 million over the next three years to support an enrolment increase of nursing spaces at publicly assisted colleges and universities by over 2,200 registered and registered practical nurses and nurse practitioners. In addition, this funding will support continued investments in innovative, flexible, online nursing pathways.
  • Since 2018, Ontario has seen a record-breaking number of new health-care professionals join the workforce, adding nearly 100,000 new nurses with another 30,000 nurses currently studying at Ontario colleges and universities.
  • On December 4, 2023, the Nursing Act, 1991 was amended to allow RNs in Ontario to prescribe specific medications and to communicate a diagnosis for the purpose of prescribing.
  • Since , 671 registered nurses have completed the training and are authorized to prescribe.
  • Ontario is investing $743 million over three years to continue to address immediate health-care staffing needs, as well as to grow the workforce for years to come.

"快播视频 is proud to be part of this innovative initiative that supports the growth and long-term sustainability of Ontario鈥檚 nursing workforce while addressing the current nursing shortage. We are grateful for the government鈥檚 support in meeting the diverse needs of nursing students, particularly those who, for personal or financial reasons, will benefit from an accelerated, direct-entry registered nursing degree. We are also excited to leverage new technologies, including virtual and augmented reality, to deliver innovative, non-traditional approaches in educating our future nursing workforce for the benefit of all Ontarians."

TORONTO, October 28, 2024 鈥 The National Cybersecurity Consortium (NCC) has announced a slate of successful project applications as part of its second annual Call for Proposals. 快播视频 has been awarded $300,000 for its research and development cybersecurity project, End-to-end Cyber-Security Solution for the Power Grid in collaboration with Cistel Technology, Siemens Canada Ltd, Carleton University and Dalhousie University.

Climate change concerns have spurred the proliferation of independent power producers (e.g. renewables) in the electric grid along with significant increase in power demands due to the electrification of fossil-fuel based technologies (e.g. transportation). Grid communications are critical for effectively coordinating the evolving grid. In this project, an end-to-end cyber security solution will be developed that leverages on the natural interdependencies of the cyber and physical domains of the electric grid to ensure reliable, secure and trust-worthy grid communications.

This year, the NCC has dedicated $22.8 million in funding as part of its commitment to the Government of Canada鈥檚 Cyber Security Innovation Network program. In addition to 快播视频鈥檚 successful project application, funds have been distributed to 37 projects put forth by Canadian organizations representing academia, private institutions, and the not-for-profit sector. The NCC鈥檚 Call for Proposals program supports projects that include:

  • Research and development projects with Technology Readiness Levels (TRL)1-6 via the design and implementation of innovative cybersecurity technologies, advancing the state-of-the-art, and supporting studies into emerging cybersecurity issues;
  • Commercialization of new technology with TRL 7-9, developing products and services that address cybersecurity challenges in critical infrastructure protection, human-centric cybersecurity, network security, software security, and privacy protection; and

Federal funding will go towards further developing immersive video game where players learn the Anishinaabe language, culture and ways of life

TORONTO, June 4, 2024 鈥 , a sociology professor at 快播视频鈥檚 Glendon Campus, is the recipient of for her Indigenous-led metaverse project Biskaabiiyaang: Creating a path towards healing and reconciliation. , associate professor in theatre and creative technologies at York鈥檚 School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD), is a co-applicant. Robyn O鈥橪oughlin joins the team as co-applicant working within the New Brunswick Ministry of Education. York and the are also partners in the grant application. The award was created in response to Call to Action 65 to establish a national research program to advance understanding of reconciliation. It is a joint initiative of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.

Chacaby鈥檚 immersive virtual game is set in a post-apocalyptic world invaded by linguicidals responsible for the death of the Ojibwe language Anishinaabemowin. It challenges players to learn the language 鈥 and save it from extinction 鈥 by exploring ruins, listening to the teachings of Elders and taking lessons from nature. Players discover how Indigenous history and culture have a role in returning beauty and magic to this world where Anishinaabe ways of life prevail. As an Indigenous community-led research project, Nokiiwin Tribal Council guides the work ensuring that Indigenous communities are first and foremost in the project鈥檚 direction.

鈥淢etaverses, as we see them in the Western world, are spaces where Indigenous people do not exist,鈥 says Chacaby, who is Anishinaabe, Beaver Clan from Kaministiquia (Thunder Bay). 鈥淭hat is a form of colonial erasure happening in these new technologies that I really want to disrupt.鈥 Part of the groundbreaking interdisciplinary research program Connected Minds: Neural and Machine Systems for a Healthy, Just Society, Biskaabiiyaang works to address the impacts of colonization on Indigenous communities, support culture-based healing practices and encourage language reclamation.

Professor Maya Chacaby
Maya Chacaby

Chacaby, a research associate with the Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Languages, has long promoted Anishinaabe culture and language through courses she鈥檚 developed at Glendon. In 2016, for her online classes, she crafted a Dungeons and Dragons-style, card-based role-playing game in Anishinaabemowin. This gamified approach to learning led to soaring proficiency levels, with grammar and other difficult areas of language acquisition becoming easier as students developed characters and completed quests. But Chacaby wanted anyone to have access to this education. That鈥檚 where the metaverse came in.

An avid gamer, Chacaby noted how within massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) like World of Warcraft and Fallout, players use and coin terms that are only understood by other users and immediate team members. That made her realize these virtual worlds were environments ripe for learning. 鈥淚 thought, 鈥業f young people can talk in this very sophisticated technical language about a made up world, we can do the exact same thing with the culture鈥,鈥 says Chacaby.

The project uses research-creation methodologies to build an audio and visual archive that is the foundation of the Biskaabiiyaang metaverse. Scott Baker, the education manager for the Nokiiwin Tribal Council, describes his excitement about Elders鈥 teachings making their way into the virtual world. 鈥淲hat the SSHRC grant is going to open up for us is to start collecting these stories,鈥 says Baker.

鈥淲e're actually documenting stories and teachings, and these will live long beyond when I'm gone,鈥 says Audrey Gilbeau, executive director of the Tribal Council. A co-creation with community Elders and Indigenous youth, the virtual world is a community-built and -owned archive that鈥檚 alive, growing and changing. She says that Elders and Knowledge Keepers who have passed away over the past five years, since work on Biskaabiiyaang began, continue to live on in the recordings and stories captured in the project.

The best way for a community to hold an archive is in a format that people can access, says Caines, adding: 鈥淭he metaverse is the archive.鈥 The researchers have partnered with , a virtual world platform, to build the metaverse and bring the archive to life. Content in the metaverse is based upon Anishinaabe worldview and culture as well as family histories and individuals鈥 lived experiences. The virtual world is a place where players learn by undertaking quests and interacting with traditional tools and objects, teachings, and language learning modules using culture-based game mechanics.

In partnership with AMPD鈥檚 new program opening at Markham Campus, undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral research fellows will come together with Indigenous teens from the region to work on the metaverse at the new facilities, as well as gain on-site training in Northern Ontario. Biskaabiiyaang is the first step in a decade-long project running in tandem with the UNESCO International Decade of Indigenous Languages. A multi-year project, it is a direct response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action 65.

TORONTO, August, 11, 2020 鈥 The Investor Protection Clinic (IPC) at 快播视频鈥檚 Osgoode Hall Law School 鈥 the first clinic of its kind in Canada 鈥 has entered into a partnership with the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) in a joint effort to meet a critical need in the community for free legal services for vulnerable, harmed retail investors.

IIROC is the pan-Canadian self-regulatory organization that oversees all investment dealers and their trading activity in Canada鈥檚 debt and equity markets. IIROC will provide the IPC with major funding annually for the next five years to allow the Clinic to continue to create value through file work and investor education.

鈥淪upport from generous partners such as IIROC is absolutely critical to the Osgoode Investor Protection Clinic's success,鈥 said Professor Poonam Puri, Founding Director of the Clinic, which provides free legal advice to people who believe their investments were mishandled and who cannot afford a lawyer.

鈥淥ur partners help to ensure that the Clinic is able to provide professional and effective services to harmed听investors. Without IIROC and our other partners, we would not be able to provide much-needed legal services to vulnerable retail investors.鈥

鈥淚IROC has referred investors to the Clinic since it was first established, so we are pleased to take the important next step of sponsorship,鈥 said Doug Harris, IIROC鈥檚 Vice-President and General Counsel. 鈥淭his strengthens our commitment to help the Clinic provide critical, free access to legal services for investors.鈥

The IPC is a game changer in the retail investment landscape. Since launching in 2016 with seed funding from the Law Foundation of Ontario, the Clinic has recorded numerous wins for clients. Clinic cases have ranged from seniors who have lost their entire retirement savings, to people who have been swindled by trusted members of their community and people who have had their investments mishandled by advisors.

The Clinic is staffed with Osgoode students who are paired with supervising lawyers from law firms in Ontario. 鈥淰ulnerable retail investors need help in navigating a complicated legal system,鈥 Puri said. 鈥淥ur students, under the supervision of some of the finest lawyers in Canada, are able to provide legal assistance while, at the same time, learning core legal skills and connecting real people with theoretical concepts. We are so grateful for our collaboration with these supervising law firms and lawyers.鈥

TORONTO, April 25, 2017 鈥 Today at 快播视频, the Government of Canada announced significant new funding to help youths in Ontario and Alberta who are homeless 鈭 or at risk of becoming homeless 鈭 to get the education, job skills and work experience they need. The almost $8 million in new funding represents a significant investment in addressing youth homelessness.

Adam Vaughan, Member of Parliament for Spadina-Fort York, announced the Skills Link program funding on behalf of the Hon. Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment Workforce Development and Labour. More than 1,300 youth and their families will take part in the project, which focuses on prevention of homelessness through early intervention and Housing First for Youth.

The project will be delivered through a partnership between national leaders on homelessness prevention including: , the at 快播视频, and the , as well as the Provinces of Ontario and Alberta, and dozens of community partners.

The goal of the project, 鈥淢aking the Shift: Reimagining the Response to Youth Homelessness Through Social Innovation,鈥 is to ensure that young people have housing stability as well as family and other supports to stay in school or access training and employment.

In the first two years of the project, demonstration projects will take place in 10 Canadian cities: Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, Calgary, Edmonton, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Red Deer, Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray.

The Canadian Observatory on Homelessness, led by 快播视频 Professor Stephen Gaetz, will launch a Youth Homelessness Social Innovation Lab to oversee the demonstration projects and develop tools and resources to help other communities to do similar projects. 听快播视频 will receive $1.45 million of the federal funding to run the lab, which will focus on knowledge mobilization, to ensure prevention models and Housing First for Youth take root at the policy and practice levels.

The Canadian Observatory on Homelessness issued a report recently that called for a major shift in addressing homelessness, to focus on prevention. This change in direction is important for young people in particular, according to the partners on the 鈥淢aking the Shift鈥 project for which funding was announced today, because becoming homeless for a sustained period may affect a young person鈥檚 health and wellbeing, their educational achievement and ultimately their ability to participate in the labour market.

鈥 The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour

鈥淗omeless youth are amongst the most vulnerable and marginalized populations who face substantial barriers to education and employment. Assisting Canada鈥檚 youth is a priority. A Way Home: Working Together to End Youth Homelessness in Canada鈥檚 project is a concrete example of what we can achieve for youth by working in partnership with organizations across the country. Projects like this can give our youth the chance to change their future.鈥
鈥 Adam Vaughan, Member of Parliament for Spadina-Fort York

鈥淭hrough a unique partnership with the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness (快播视频), MaRS Centre for Impact Investing, two provinces and dozens of community partners, the Making the Shift project will ensure that young people at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness achieve housing stability and have natural supports such as family that are essential as they receive support to stay in school or access training and employment.鈥
鈥 Melanie Redman, Executive Director, A Way Home Canada

This project will not only enable over a thousand homeless youth to access education and employment, but will provide us with a much stronger evidence base about how to prevent youth homelessness and support young people who do experience homelessness to exit this situation. It鈥檚 all about helping young people in a tough situation to move forward in their lives in a way that promotes wellness and the chance to succeed.鈥
鈥 Stephen Gaetz, Professor, 快播视频 and Director, the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness

鈥淭his visionary investment by the Government of Canada not only recognizes the leadership that A Way Home Canada, The Canadian Observatory on Homelessness at York and their many partners have provided through the development of meaningful strategies to support homeless youth in Canada, but it is also an investment in our nation鈥檚 future, ensuring that all young Canadians are able to contribute to shaping a better country and a better world.鈥
