{"id":365498,"date":"2022-12-02T14:35:06","date_gmt":"2022-12-02T19:35:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/laps\/?post_type=summer-abroad&#038;p=365498"},"modified":"2025-09-05T15:19:49","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T19:19:49","slug":"glbl-3581","status":"publish","type":"summer-abroad","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/laps\/summer-abroad\/glbl-3581\/","title":{"rendered":"GLBL 3581 6.0 - South Korea: The Politics of Youth and Old Age"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This course studies the politics of contemporary South Korea with a focus on the political debates and cultural shifts - including intergenerational conflicts - that arise from a rapid industrialization and aging population.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first week of the course, taking place at 快播视频\u2019s Keele campus, students will learn about the history and politics of modern Korea, from the start of the 20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century to the present. Following this week of intensive learning, students will travel to Seoul, the capital of South Korea and the home of half the nation's population. In Seoul, learning is composed primarily of guided experiential opportunities, including visits to museums, universities, and cultural and historical sites including palaces and temples.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Field visits include the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.much.go.kr\/en\/mainen.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Museum of Korean Contemporary History<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/museum.seoul.go.kr\/eng\/index.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seoul Museum of History<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.museum.go.kr\/site\/eng\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Museum of Korea<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sscmc.or.kr\/foreign\/eng\/introduction.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seodaemun Prison History Hall<\/a>, and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.warmemo.or.kr\/LNG\/main.do?lan=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">War Memorial of Korea<\/a>. The site visits will be preceded or followed by a short lecture to relate the visit to the course material. There will also be a full-day guided tour to the<a href=\"https:\/\/dmz.gg.go.kr\/all-about-the-dmz\/history-of-the-dmz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;DMZ<\/a>&nbsp;(the border between North and South Korea) that is located 75 kilometers north of Seoul.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will spend time at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yonsei.ac.kr\/en_sc\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yonsei University<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/neweng.cau.ac.kr\/index.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chung-Ang University<\/a>&nbsp;in Seoul to attend lectures on Korean history, politics and social policy with Korean students.
