La conf\u00e9rence fait partie du History Caf\u00e9\/Caf\u00e9 historique et est financ\u00e9e par la s\u00e9rie de conf\u00e9rences Albert Tucker. Venez rencontrer d'autres professeurs d'histoire et des \u00e9tudiants int\u00e9ress\u00e9s par l'histoire !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le noble du XVIe si\u00e8cle, Alvise Cornaro, sugg\u00e9rait qu'une bonne vie m\u00e8nerait \u00e0 une bonne mort, aussi rapide qu'indolore. La r\u00e9alit\u00e9 \u00e9tait cependant bien plus compliqu\u00e9e. Reprenant certaines de ces complications, cette pr\u00e9sentation examine\u00a0comment les premiers m\u00e9decins modernes ont \u00e9largi leur r\u00f4le dans les soins en fin de vie, \u00e9tendant les pratiques de soins palliatifs \u00e0 une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 la mort \u00e9tait de plus en plus m\u00e9dicalis\u00e9e. \u00c0 Venise, les m\u00e9decins \u00e9taient sur leur lit de mort bien avant le XVIIIe si\u00e8cle, lorsque les histoires traditionnelles de mort citent leur importance.\u00a0Ils fournissaient \u00e0 leurs patients des soins palliatifs qui diminuaient les souffrances physiques (en particulier l'importance croissante de l'opium).\u00a0Cependant, ils ont \u00e9galement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 des mesures palliatives r\u00e9pondant \u00e0 la souffrance psychologique de leurs patients ; cette m\u00e9decine de l'esprit a r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9 d'anciennes notions philosophiques de la bonne mort et a d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 une gamme de consolations pour les pr\u00e9occupations, les peurs et les angoisses mondaines des patients. Compte tenu de cette \u00e9volution, cette pr\u00e9sentation se concentrera \u00e9galement sur la mani\u00e8re dont cette m\u00e9decine de l'esprit -\u00a0<em>medicina mentis<\/em> - s'opposait \u00e0 la m\u00e9decine de l'\u00e2me, offerte par les pr\u00eatres sous la forme des sacrements, \u00e9galement connue sous le nom de\u00a0<meta charset=\"utf-8\"><em>cura animarum<\/em>.<br><br>Cynthia Klestinec est professeur d'anglais et coordinatrice de la mineure en sciences humaines m\u00e9dicales \u00e0 l'Universit\u00e9 de Miami.
